The local swap shop has a Holley 850 Double Pumper for $50. I just wanted to know if this would work better on my '69 430 than the 750Q-jet. I also would like to know what I would need to do from a linkage standpoint to use it and the vacuum lines. If it would be that great for me and someone else wants it I can get more info for you to. Thanks,
The list number is stamped on the front side of the choke horn. should be 4 numbers and might be followed by a dash with another number but maybe not. For instance on my Holley 750 the list number is 4779-4, just to give you an idea of what you're looking for. Hope this helps.
Sure. Depending on when it was made it will be in a few different areas. But all Holley's have the list number on them in more than one place, so it should make it easy. Most likely there will be a number on the choke air horn, sometimes on the metering blocks, and have seen (not to many times) on the base plate. it should be a four digit # and sometimes followed by a dash and another single digit #:TU:
If it is an 850 DP it is a great carb to have modified. The 850 is supposed to have the same venturi size as the 1000 hp.
I will post the pictures after lunch. I guess the question is still, "Would this work well on a 430?" It is a stock 430 out of a '69 Wildcat and it runs pretty strong. I just didn't know if a double pumper is what I need. Again if it honestly isn't that much better than the 750Q-Jet(for stock build) that comes with the engine I can pick it up for someone else.
Matt- Hope I'm not stealing your thread here. if anyone is interested I have for sale a new, in the box, never installed, Holley 850 DP. It is the "0-4781C" classic series carb. New at Summit it sells for $490.00 "with free shipping" but a handling charge of blah blah blah:laugh: I'm selling for $440.00 with free handling charge but not free shipping And Matt, if you don't want this post here, pm me and I'll delete it. Thanks, Guy
Yes, depending on what list # is on it I would be gratefull if you could get it for me or tell me how to get it. as for working on a 430... is it stock? It might be to big for a stock 430, anybody? Pretty sure you could get it to work with a little jetting though.
The 4781 carb is a great carb. Would it work on a stock 430??? It would work but the fuel economy would be reduced a bunch vs. the QJ. If its tuned right it'll make more power than a well tuned QJ. The Holley is real easy to tune. You'll need to modify the fuel line to run the double pumper carb. For the stone stock engine I think I'd stick with the QJ since you'll spend more time just driving and less time racing. With gas at $3+ per gallon it would most likely be a waste. But if the occassional grin you'll get by stabbing the throttle is worth it then its a great carb. And the QJ can be fine tuned to improve its performance over stock and come close but not overtake the Holley's potential.
If this is to much fuel for the car I think I will stick with the Q-Jet. If anyone does want it here is the address of the shop. http://www.actionautoofalbertlea.com/ Todd is the guy. Price was $60 and it will need to be gone through. I think the number was supposed to be 6R 4237 B
I don't think it will do what your looking for. Overkill imo. Besides I always go brand new on the carbs! Just never had a good experience with used ones. You race this car?
Nope. Just a stock 430 in it right now. I found this carb and was thinking about it because a few of my friends run Holleys and have very good luck with them. I don't really want a double pumper. I suppose I really need to learn to tune the Q-Jet. If that works well maybe try and fine a 800 Q-Jet. We have a 1977 Cadillac Fleetwood we use for a field car that has a Q-Jet on it. I wonder if that is an 800CFM unit. Hmmmmmm.
was the 4237 on the choke air horn, on the SIDE of the air horn? that 4237 is a cast number i think. although 4237 is also an oem number...
It was on the side. I could not find another numbers. It has mechanical secondaries. Last used on a 400 BBC in a pickup.
huh, I search in my books here and on line @ Holley's site. I show a kit aval. for a 4237 oem number. I even called Holley...they say it's a casting number, but I think he may be on crack or something, b/c I show it as an oem number, just don't know what it's from. Still looking into it..not to many production cars came with DP's
