Im installing new door panels (front & rear) from Legendary on my 65 Skylark. Im having some installation problems. Legendary sells the door panel clips & plastic retainers with their repro door panels. (see the 2 parts on the left those are from Legendary. The white retainer is from Cars Inc.) Ive also included the Legendary installation instructions. However, only my rear door panels use these door panel clips. My front door panels have nails that go into the white plastic retainers. The reproduction panels do not have these nails, and the new hardware (the clips & the orange plastic retainers) do not fit into the nail slots So what do I have to do for my front panels? Enlarge the holes & use the Legendary hardware? Has anyone else encountered this problem?
First of all I never got instructions with my 64 door panels. Second I have the same issue mine have the nails and the repo panels have nothing. I also got my stuff from Legendary. I think a call is in order.ou:
Do you have the "nails" from your original panels? If so, are they removeable? Someone has got to make or have those white oval plastic inserts. Have you tried looking on Restoration Specialty and Supply's website?
Still no reply to the email... I'll call when I get a chance (unless someone else wants to call or direct them to this thread --- let me know)... The door panel nail clips are available & so are the white plugs... See FA 2866 & FA 3852 here: http://www.mrgusa.com/pdfs/24-27grmet.pdf The problem with using FA 2866 is you'd have to put the door nail clip directly over the holes (for the door panel "clips" that don't fit -- see second pic above) Legendary cut in the door panels, thus weakening the door panel because the holes are so close to the edge of the panel (again see second pic above)... I ordered 1 of the nail clips (FA 2866) just to test things out and 12 of the white plugs (FA 3852)....
Hi Ed - Did you get a chance to call today? (I'm at work all day and I'm on pacific time, so it's difficult for me to reach them...) Thanks
Looks like we need to re-use the perimeter metal trim with the nails on it Hello, They did reply to me --- it was in my "junk mail" folder.... Looks like we need to re-use the metal perimeter trim on the backside of the door panel. "Dan Most people use their original metal perimeter trim before gluing panel material around back side of panel .if you elect not to re-use your perimeter trim you can glue edges around and use a decorative screw to attach panel to door using the same mounting holes. I hope this information helps with your project Thanks so much" However - I still think we have the problem of the door panel board being weak around the holes Legendary cut in them... I think it would be best if we inserted a "plug" in those holes prior to installing the metal perimeter trim. ????? your thoughts?
Re: Looks like we need to re-use the perimeter metal trim with the nails on it Legendary's latest reply: "I do not think you will need to reinforce clip area .if you feel additional support is needed, please go ahead and support. I do not feel it will be needed. If you have any other concerns please contact me" I guess that mystery is now over... HTH
I had a local hot rod shop put the metal perimeter trim from the old panels onto the new panels... Pics soon...
