Not to mention on each shift if you put it back to low stall the high stall slippage is gone. No slippage = better qtr. times. I have one and I'm very happy with it. I've hammered it often with a heavy car.

You won't get a sloshy feeling with a Coan converter. Coan makes some of the best converters available period. Trust me, you will not be dissapointed with a coan converter.
I like the sound of that. My plan right now seems to be: Because i am not rebuilding the tranny yet, i am going to start with a coan, drive my car around easily, then when i rebuild the tranny i might end up replacing it with an SP and selling the coan to my friend. then i buy a new driveshaft and rear end, and then i am the king of the streets in my town :Brow: :3gears: :bglasses: :TU:

Another option would be PTC. They had a rep at the nats. Answered all my questions on converters. They had some for sale there a few pics. notice the balloning plates.
im guessing the ballon plate is the thing in the center thats bigger on the one on the left. That is cool.
I've been running the PAE 3000 SP setup... really like it, as does everyone that rides in it. I've got a couple buddies that run fairly high HP rides that will be stepping up to a PAE SP trans. I'd have a hard time going back to any other setup that's driven on the street.
Thanks to a fellow board member I got a great deal on a PAE 4000 VP setup, that's quite a bit steeper than what I have now. Looking forward to some higher-rpm fun next year! Devon
I have a 3800 stall ATI treemaster in my Skylark, that I ordered from ATI. It has none of the above mentioned slosh. At normal driving and highway speed it feels like a stock conv. Again as said above, you get what you pay for. I paid more than $700 in 1998 dollars.
Coan has great products and even better customer service. I would not go anywhere else. PTC does not answer e-mails......:spank:
Love my SP and my car is basically a street only car. There are several options for the way to engage from low to high stall and vice versa. I choose a simple 2 position toggle switch under dash. I did have a solenoid to bad and yes, you must remove trans and front pump to get to it for replacement. After that ordeal, I had Jim Burek of PAE build me a solenoid replacement kit so that the solenoid is reloacted and mounts in the pan area piggybacking with the kickdown piece. Should it go out again, simple fix. That has been the only problem with mine in the 9 years of ownership I've had.
A little off subject , but can anyone reccomend a book on the SP . Have one in my 67 GS 400 and want to freshen it and make it work .
I dont think there's any books on it, just a few articles on the web from magazines. Do a search for switch pitch on here and weed through the posts, the best info is right on this Board!
have the st300 in my 65 its cool but would like an extra gear if it could be dont to a 350 i would have it
I have four vehicles(all fullsizes)hanging around here with switch pitch trannys. How about 1.70 short times in a 4803 lb fullsize with only a 3.42 gear.. Any high stall fixed pitch converter from coan or anyone else is going to feel mushy in such a heavy car with relatively poor gearing. These are all the smaller ST300 converter, two of those being the 4000 model from PAE. The other two I cut apart and modified, then had a local shop reweld and balance. On the other hand, I have a 327 powered Monza with a 10" coan and it is awesome in that application. Doesn't feel loose at all, but wont stall until almost 4000RPM if I nail it. So it depends on whether it is street/strip, strip only, how heavy the car is, and how it is geared.
You have to decide if its a street car or a race car. You can;t take your 5500 stall on a nice highway drive, without burning up the tranny, where with a switch pitch you could. But if your only racing the 5500 maybe the way to go since its desgined for racing.
I used a PAE4000 sp TH400 behind a 300. The difference was night and day from using the st300. It felt like the engine gained 50hp. It was a little to much high stall (4000) but on low stall (1400) it would bark the tires going into 2nd and 3rd. Then I put in a 455 afterwards. You can use the stock sp conv. from the st300 in a sp400. Ray
