Hi all After searching for close to five years, I finally managed to obtain an original GSX hood tach. Funny enough, the tach was virtually in my back yard, and I had even driven the car that it is from about ten years ago. Someone has monkeyed with the wiring, which I will need to address. The tach is in remarkable condition, but I have a question about the correct sheen that the black housing should have. Is the housing supposed to have the same sheen as the hood stripes, or is it supposed to be a bit shinier? Not sure if I will install it on my car, as this tach has the third mounting stud, which my car did not, but I will feel better knowing that my car will have an original tach should the day come that I sell my GSX.
Very cool. Congratulations on the score. I have a original 1971 hood tach but my GSX is a 1970 so I am running a repop one on my car. Talk about hard to find part !!!! Your persistence paid off.
Congratulations Randy. Funny related story (not funny to Randy unfortunately). The tach in my avatar IS the original hood tach to Randy's car (yes, the actual one his car was built with). As many of you know, I'd sold all my cars (incl. my GSX) and most of my parts back in '08-09 (to survive the recession & as a result had also lost my shop/storage). Wasn't sure I'd ever be back but I have the disease. Around 2016 what I thought was financial light at the end of the tunnel appeared (wound up being an oncoming trian, lol) & I was digging through an old box of used parts I hadn't sold and found this orig. hood tach. I had no recollection of where I'd gotten it but 100% knew for sure it wasn't the one from my old GSX. Well, a fellow (unnamed) board member was looking for a used one & I literally gave it to him. Fast forward a few years and Randy contacted me. Turned out Randy was talking to the guy who restored his GSX (I can't remember if that's who he bought it from as well) and he remembered selling me the orig. hood tach from the car (must've been not long after this board's inception). I told him who had it and even blessed it's sale if Randy wanted to offer him $ to try and pry it out of his hands & also let its current owner know it was ok if he wanted to sell it to Randy (& only to Randy). Unfortunately that didn't work out & he wanted to hang onto it, which was totally understandable given its intended use & I think while disappointed that even Randy understood. Idk if or how much was offered but I suspect Randy would've paid far more than it was worth.
I'd like to get 1 or 2 of those stickers if possible. Not sure I'll ever need it but I have a bunch of stickers that board members have had made. If you have some, lmk what they cost.
Randy - maybe he will trade you for the one you found? If you want to original back - that one looks really nice!
Very cool Randy. Just a heads up that the hoses are on their way. And just to share, when I was in high school I tried to buy a 71 GS 455 4 speed convertible. Never got the car but the guy that had it smacked up the front end and skipped town in the car and left the damaged GS hood behind. I asked his land lord about the car and the hood and told me to take the hood or he was going to skid it into the river, any ways the only memento I have of one of "the ones that got away" is this Dixco hood tack that was mounted on the car
