Is there a way to repair the resistance? I took the sender out of the tank but in either position the resistance is infinitely large - measured on the sender itself. I tried to tap on it, but that didn't help. Or is it beyond repair and should I buy a new one?
I never was able to find a source for a sending unit for my 1967 LeSabre 340 cui, so a repair guide would be more than welcome
Most electric supply stores/electronic repair shops sell "contact cleaner". You could try cleaning the inside of the unit with that.
Senders are cheap enough to replace. If you csnt find one, you csn always send your out to get rebuilt. Or, you could buy a readily available "A" body sender and swap the resistor assy into your hard to find sender
Lots of good info about what to do if you have a bad sender but.. and maybe I missed it.. what if the sender is fine and its the other end that's the problem? The fuel gauge? Is their a way to fix the fuel gauge?
The fuel gauge is pretty reliable. Sometimes the pins in the back can break from rough handling, but they can be soldered. There are businesses that specialize in gauge and speedometer repair.
Yeah, I remember that. It isn't your thread though. That's why it took me a little longer to find it. https://www.v8buick.com/index.php?threads/rally-gauge-cluster-repair.341857/
I grounded my tan wire as suggested, went right to full as you stated it might. I will dig into the sender ground next. I just may have an operational gauge for the first time in 5 years soon.
Well, it looks like I may not have an operational fuel gauge anytime soon then. Now I know why I always had bad marks in school regarding reading comprehension.
Well, 2nd time reviewing this thread. Last year it was the ground. This time it doesn’t appear I’ll be as lucky.
Probably the sending unit in the tank. CARS carries the one you need. EDIT: They don't. And their new website is terrible. Maybe someone else can chime in with a different source.
I used the AMD one in the GS400. It fit good, but not as good as the original, when it came to the gas tank to trunk clearance. The gauge works good but shows empty when there is still about 1/8 tank left. Maybe that's not a bad thing, though...
I've found mine does the same with the CARS sending unit. I was close to "W' ("walk") and gassed up to (what I thought) wasn't going to be a full tank. Once I leveled out, I was past the "F". Things seem to get wonky down around an 1/8th of a tank on these cars or even near the Full mark.
Well it looks like I'm diving in. Do we have any updates on the best sending unit? View attachment 627981
That sender was always flaky in that car ever since I put the tank in it in 2012. It would work when it wanted to.
