Anyone remember these? This was put on my dad’s GS in 1977. I still remember the state highway patrolman scrapping of the old one and installing this one. We were on our way home from the grocery store. I was 9. Just a funny ole memory.
When my car was new (1970) Massachusetts required them twice a year. Also, up until a couple years ago, the month you got your inspection sticker was when the calendar year started in terms of expiration. I think I got 13 months out of a sticker for over 20 years. Now if you get one in December, it expires in December. When you go to renew in January, you'll still get a December sticker. Bastards!!
Arkansas did away with safety inspections about 20 years ago. When I was a youngster, we all knew which garages would pass inspection of our POS's, although the cops did undercover stings to see if garages were actually conducting inspections.
I remember being stopped several times during the mid 70's early 80's for a OSHP safety inspection. If you failed. They gave you X number of days to repair and get a follow up inspection at a OSHP post.
I wish we'd do away with them but MA is all about money grabs and these definitely are just that. It's funny how one state has them and others don't. It's as though the emissions vastly differ from one state to another. The same goes for treating roads in states that have winter months. MA uses tons and tons of salt, other states sand and others nada. Mind boggling.
VA still has annual ones . State police are responsible but private garages do them. For some it generates business, others are honest...
I turned wrenches in college at a couple different inspection stations in wny.. if you saw some of the crap people want to drive, you would support state inspections 150%.. its unfortunate, but some folks don't care about their safety or the safety of other drivers.
In Florida we must believe in natural selection (thank God). We had inspections 25-30 years ago, but they were only for emissions. You had to get the certificate from a county inspection station before you renewed your tags with the tax collector's office. Glad they did away with that racket. I think it only lasted a couple years.

I have the last sticker from my GSX before it was taken off the road and placed in storage for 24 years. Fortunately, the guy who bought the car in 2001 and did the resto kept the sticker from the windshield.
