During the freshening up of the Eaton Posi unit for my '70 GS455 we discovered that the driveshaft is a Chevy type that takes a "conversion" U-Joint in order to mate up with the Turbo 400 slip yoke and the pinion on the GM 8.5 rear axle. (71/72 type) I'm wanting to obtain a correct driveshaft so I can use correct solid U-Joints. So, where is the best place to search for one? I want a steel driveshaft vs the aluminum ones offered by some vendors. A nice original shaft would be nice. (I'll place a Parts Wanted ad on this forum if that's the best suggested option.) Thanks, fellas.
The shaft should be about 54 1/4” center to center. The original shafts were tapered at each end. Any aftermarket shaft will be straight end to end. The correct BOP joints are 3R.
Just have one built at a local driveshaft shop. Let them tell you how they want you to measure. That is what I did years ago.
Did you have the entire shaft including the shift yoke and U-Joints built or, just the shaft itself and you used your parts?
I have no idea. I gave them my old (original) drive shaft, which they said, was twisted like a pretzel, and they made me a new one. I picked it up assembled, and installed it.
When I have shafts made here, they have the joints installed, balanced and ready to go. I provide a yoke if I have a nice one,or just get a new one with it. I think there are about 7 different TH400 yokes available.
