My nephew and I went to Beech Bend today. He in a Mustang Ecoboost and me in my 70 Stage 1 with 200-4R. I've had this transmission 10 years and it has been pretty good. Always a strong 1-2 shift but at the track under WOT, it hit the rev limiter and I had to ease out to get it to shift. Once in second, it was party time again. I had this transmission built and installed by the builder and asked for it to be able to handle 500HP. Without slicks and on street tires, I ran 13.239@103 so I'm well under that threshold by at least 100HP. The 2-3 shift seems fine and didn't hit the rev limiter. Is this a governor problem? That's in the pan, correct? How can I adjust it down to something closer to the rev limiter? Any easy rule of thumb or do I need to start with a new governor and start over?
If this issue started all of a sudden then it’s likely not an adjustment issue. You may be lower on HP compared to the rating however the torque rating is more applicable to these trans.
I didn't shift manually at the track but I have shifted manually before but not at WOT. It hits a hard second gear at mostly WOT in drive. It never did it before but I've never held WOT through 1st gear before. It will almost always spin and I let off or I'm already rolling along in 2nd when I hit the floor.
I like 5500. I have an adjustable rev limiter. I could go up a smidge. I used to wind my other, iron-headed motor to 6200 but I was young, dumb and motors were cheaper to build then... and quicker to build. Geez, over a year on the 350 and still hoping for GS Nats but not looking good.
Your TV cable stretch or need re-adjusting? Holding mine in gear manually, it'll shift when I shift it. It short shifts if left in D.
Greg, I made my TV bracket & the cable anchor myself years ago. See Pics. I use a B&M TV cable that has the 'D' click adjustment. One or two clicks of adjustment changes shift qualities. Mine shifts very normally regular driving. Shifts at 5,5k WOT, left in drive with no gov mods yet. Manually, it's stays in gear till I shift, 7k if I want . It is an 87 brf trans tho. How's your fluid level?
As I understand it, the TV cable controls the clutch pressure and the shift points are controlled by the governor. If you suddenly had a change in the shifts, usually harder, the cable has likely stretched, which is a problem with the repro cables. I think I remember you have a GM cable? You might want to give Lonnie a call at Extreme Automatics a call to discuss, or the guru of your choice.
The transmission guy built and installed the transmission about 10 years ago. He had a guy do the TV cable arm so I assume that is good. It has not been apart since he built it but I've never held 1st through WOT until this track visit. Fluid level checked just a hair above the full mark while hot in park. I'd call it full otherwise. I wouldn't say anything is shifting harder or changed, it just didn't shift out of 1st at 5500 under WOT. Back off a tad and it will shift to second and go back to WOT to finish the pass. It is a GM cable as far as I know. I can readjust it and see how it acts now that I have something to look for.
I don't know. I've never tried that. I prefer it to be automatic at those RPMs. I may try at 5000 to see what happens. Should it shift if manually shifted below 5500 at WOT? I don't know what the operation should be. I know my old T400 would blow into second at 6000.
The guy that built my 200r said if the shift point is to low he would have to grind some metal off the the governor or something in the pan.
