Hi I am building a 67 conv skylark with a 10.1 appx compression 455. The gears are either 3.23 or 3.42 not sure yet on that. T400 is being built now with of course a very firm shift kit, what would you guys recommend for a converter? My buddy mike in topeka who runs strong buicks said to call ati and have them build me one with a 3400 lockup street converter but they said they wouldnt build me one only offer an off the shelf one. I want one thatll stall what i need but I want it tight so its not always slipping. I dont think I have ever had a really good stall and dont want to screw this up, the cam is a 310H from Ta performance. Thanks for the help!
I’m running the TA 290/94H with 2.93s now; going to 3.23s. I bought a Hughes 2000BOP and really like it. It allows enough slip for good torque multiplication but isn’t mushy when driving. I’m not familiar with the 310 (I see the specs but don’t know much about them in the real world). 3400 is a lot of stall; are you sure you need that much? If you do, you should ask Jim W. for recommendations and a build-his converters are highly recommended. Patrick
I heard about his recommendations from reading posts about stalls but Ive tried to get onto his website and nothing is working so i dont even know if hes still in business or just having issues and is too busy to have them fixed.
Pretty much all the converter guys are on the same page now,....its all been done,...its all been figured out,...and "shelf converter" doesn't really mean much anymore,..its not 1990,...hundreds of thousands of combos have been built and bought,.. the info is documented and they simply build the more popular models that will suit a wide range of setups,...that's not necessarily a bad thing

there are only so many stators,..fin angles,...etc etc,... Ive used FTI,..UCC,..BTE,..Hughes,..ATI,..PTC,..CPT ..And seversl others,..Don't ever recall getting a "bad" one or one that didn't do what I asked for,..except for the ATI
I need more advice than even that thread can provide. If I buy that converter, I don’t sell the Riviera

I have a 9.5 Jim converter also.best converter on the market for that price.My car has about the same compression as yours,with S-I steel heads,with the old converter it ran 11.70 at Atco.its faster now with Jim's converter.Bruno
I have a JW 9.5" custom converter and it's awesome. PM Jim Weise on here with all your cars specs and he'll tell you what it needs and build for you. You wont be disappointed with his converter that's for sure!

Yes, I hadn't heard of a lock-up converter for the 400. With all this talk of new, modern converters, have they pretty much taken the place of anybody using the switch-pitch? It seems like they might. Best, Ranger Aiken, SC
Yes, I knew that but hadn't heard anyone putting it in a GS. It would require a computer, of course. I assume this has been done? Does the trans need beefing or is it strong enough to handle 500+ h.p. as-built? Best, Ranger Aiken, SC
