How long is too long to wait before starting the engine after priming the oil ? There’s alot of stuff that has to be put back on, distributor, valve covers, hoses, etc. I mean are we talking minutes here ?
Don’t sweat anything ... if you did it good for that. Distribute some fossil sauce over your goods is all more better. When you firmly believe all 3 groups want to hang out wait for the oil pressure gauge to move put some more fuel in the toilet and have yourself some fun.
I would already have my valve covers on. No sense in flushing the assembly lube off the push rods. Spin the pump, till you see pressure. Stick the distributor in, and start it up.
Exactly right. "Priming" isn't intended to lubricate anything. It's intended to displace air from the pickup tube, oil passages leading to the pump, and the oil filter. The rest of the engine begins draining as soon as you stop "priming", or any time you shut off the engine. Prime until you see pressure on the gauge. Done. Cram the distributor in, and fire that mother up.
