I love his stuff... Hes testing real life facts and creates the real life # to back it up.. Now Richard got a unknown Junkyard 455 on the dyno and will do dyno tests with every mod. on Nitrous
He’s great. 307/465 on a low compression stocker with unknown miles seems pretty good. What do we figure is lost in running accessories? (No alt/water pump/ PS pump) 10-20%? Roadkill garage got this motor and another 455 when they were going to build Freiburger’s 66 convert, but ended up putting it in the ‘66 “crew cab chevelle”. Freiburger has good knowledge of the 455, and I always wondered why he chose the one they ended up putting in the chevelle over this one in Richard’s video. It looked fairly rebuilt with the chrome accessories. Can’t wait to see the cam swap episode.
Nice.. im a huge roadkill fan. love it.. But whats the best is that we see real life tests , real life success and real life failures. There is a lot of BS online of people who claim # . I was actually in touch with Richard and motivated him to Turbo the stock 455. He will turbo it but i am not sure if he does Bolt ons and cam 1st. I assume a single turbo stocker build that richard will do is in the ballpark of 3K $ ... you cant get that power with 3K$ NA build 455.
Not even close.. I just hope the stock bottom end will survive under boost. Good to see he didn’t push it past 5K N/A and nitrous fed
Cast pistons with nitrous and/or turbo? Good luck...... Also, 39deg timing may have made most power but too much IMO for engine to live on 91 octane For the extra 5 hp that extra timing may have added...not worth it esp on a junkyard motor.
Well it was a low compression engine, like 8.5 to 1, so that chamber is huge and needs all the timing advance help it can get
The cast pistons aren't a concern with moderate boost levels Turbo 3.8 pistons are cast,..they do have the steel support cast into them but cast nonetheless LS are hyperpistons which in theory are worse I would have no issue running 12lbs or so on old school cast piston,..just cant let it detonate
Today's video comparing Buick torque to other big blocks is very interesting...looks like we've been right all these years, lol! (took Ch*vy 20 years to catch up, hahaha)
Exactly. Its proven that not the piston material is the main concern for added boost. It's the detonation. If you are able to control that you get a far way with cast or hypereuretic pistons.
Yes, and micro processor control with knock sensors make that possible. Not so much with our engines.
That's just where you play it safe man,....limit timing to 24° and run enough octane to cover your ass
I can almost guarantee I could make 800 at the crank with a stock shortblock, . It's all tune an load,...the turbo loads everything completely different,..twin 366's on 114 octane,..e85,..or pump and meth and do work!!
That was my point....doesn't take much detonation to hurt a cast or hyper piston.....or rod bearings.... My 73 8.5 motor detonated at 34deg on 93 octane. 39 on 91 not good unless maybe it was running real cool on dyno and no heat soak like we get in the real world.
All very good comments. Thats why i love such tests as Richard does, we can speculate alot, but neither of us would really risk to blow up there motors while testing real life tests. Thats why we have Richard/Motortrend. @Larry : absoluly correct, Knock sensor plays a big role In general modern technology gives even us now the option to control timing throughout the whole curve with or without power adders. I agree with Hugger A stock shortblock with controlled timing (EFI and cooling ( IC or Meth inj.) could probably handle good 600+ .
I like the real, balanced, unbiased the way he views things. I'm hoping that he comes to the realization that BBBs can make torque AND rev and make HP up top. Prob not going to happen since revving junkyard motor past 5000 with turbo doesn't look like a good idea....but hey might hang in there.... Most of my stuff came out of junkyard so I'm game......
Not bad, over 700 ft. lbs of torque. Didn't expect it to survive at close to 10 psi boost. That's how Csordas Jr. lunched a bunch of stock blocks on his pro charged 71.
lets see if Richard decides to inspect the motor. That would tell us what went wrong. It still had Oil pressure and thatis good since it would have been the 1st failure source everyone would have guessed i think.
