I put a 12 bolt posi in my 68 Skylark several years ago. At the track the other day and snapped an axle. I pulled both axle thinking i could push out the broken piece, i had tried a magnet with no luck. I removed the bolt but can't get the pin out of the diff. it's loose and move about 1/16' in and out. Used a drift pin and a hammer but it won't come out, it rattles around but that's it. Cheers!
It's a 10 bolt with bolt in axles. You can find them in 71-2 Skylark and GS, and Cutlass. Pretty strong especially if you go with 30 spline Moser axles. 12 bolts have C clip axles.
I'm working on doing a 33 spline and will have my 30 spline spool setup for sale when I get it done I wouldn't tell others to do it but I ran a stk axle in my gs into the 10.90s going upper 1.40s and very low 1.50 60ft times. Never had an axle come out like that.........
So the bolt is a couple inches long? Other axle still in then? Must be a spider or its washer wore a groove in the cross pin.
I have both axles out, the bolt came out easy (all of it). when i rotate the pinion by hand it's difficult and feels really bad. looking at the other axle's length I'm guessing it broke close to the splines. Knowing how tight the carrier goes in I'm concerned it won't slide out if I don't remove the piece. doesn't help it in the car, on jack stands.. maybe it's time for a complete rear, drum to drum and craigslist this thing. I'm confused by the description(bolt?) of what is going on. First try: I'm assuming you mean the splined end of the axle is still sitting in the posi. Usually they shear right where the spines meet the smooth part. Get a long black iron or galvanized pipe smaller than the diameter of the splines that is long enough to hit the piece from the opposite side of the rear. I use one that is long enough to get from brake plate to brake plate. I then use it to push a rag through when I want to get all the metallic grease out of the axle tube through the backing plate. Second try: Or do you mean your axles are already converted to bolt-in style with a retainer? 12 bolts come from the factory with C-clip retainers and it looks like your axle has a retainer on it way down there in that picture. Are you saying the large pin that holds the posi gears in place won't come out but you were able to get that large pin's retaining bolt out intact and now the big pin moves in and out a little but won't come out? If so at this point pull the bearing caps and see what happens. Worse case it won't come out. I've had that happen to the large pin and it is a big time PIA to get out and posi damage usually ensues. Usually the little retainer bolt likes to shear though. Most importantly(to me) is if those are aftermarket axles(it sure looks like it for how clean it looks) what brand are they because I'm soon in the market for some 12 bolt axles and I don't want to get that brand.
It sounds like the small spider gears are galled-up on the cross shaft,which is keeping you from being able to remove the cross shaft. Sometimes you can use a 4lb hammer and a large punch,but if it’s real bad,you will need to torch it all out. Been there done that. Regardless,just remove the carrier from the housing to work on it. At least you have eliminators on there to keep the shaft in. What brand of shaft is that?
Caps removed, can't slide it out. I can spin the pin. Pin moves .030 in and out. Picture #2 see wear on the pin .
my new question... can i drive the pin thru and out of the diff, when the diff is installed in the rear axle housing.
I pulled the rear axle and dropped it off at The GearShop. He'll look at removing the cross pin. fingers crossed.
