hello! i own a GS 455 / 1970 its still a original carbuild but i want to get a new carb and put the rochester quad aside for a while. since i had a bunch of minor problems lately with it. i have a person that will help me look into the problems with the rochester . what do you recommend as a solid replacement?
Agreed - we've got a few of the best Q-Jet Builders in the hobby right on this board, my go-to guy is Ken from Everyday Performance... Once it's right, you'll swear by it.
Ken or Mark Northcut can do it right for you. Mark did mine, a level 3 and it’s perfect. These two know their stuff. Cliff
thanks for the advice guys. i will keep the quadrajet, im sure it will run fine when its cleaned and tuned. i will put my trust in the guy who will help me with it. i lost my faith a little when it backfired and had some heavy smoke from the carb. im not a experienced musclecar owner . i love the cars from that era thou. will try to learn alot in the future.
Since you are in Sweden, you might want to have your guy read through Cliff Ruggel's book: https://www.abebooks.com/Rebuild-Mo...Ey_LVpXd8_RCul7mkothtr8C5rGHsWLBoCg2MQAvD_BwE or ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/SA113-Quad...025?_trksid=p2349526.m4383.l4275.c10#viTabs_0 Also, Someone here may have a copy to sell if you ask.
Thanks! I Will ask for someone selling it. They dont ship worldwide sadly. i Will try get it elsewere
There can be MANY things that would cause the carb. to backfire with the resulting smoke. Engine tune-up, plugs, wires ,cap, rotor, points, bad accelerator pump plus others. IF you end up finding the book let a knowledgeable re-builder in your neck of the woods that is competent enough to take it on. It's not ROCKET SCIENCE by any means, BUT knowledge today is hard to come buy & the two guys mentioned can take care of it, BUT it will have to be shipped to the U.S. This brings up the possibility it can get lost god forbid. I think, & this is just my opinion, get the carb. number off the carb. before doing ANYTHING. No sense starting with the wrong carb. The two guys mentioned may just have the correct carb. they have already re-built sitting on the shelf. Who knows, BUT you'll never know if you don't contact them. When the car is running properly, & the guys on this forum are VERY knowledgeable & can help you tremendously, you will be surprised on how well it will run. You MUST be willing to learn & get yours or someone else's hands dirty. JMHO Tom T.
If your Q-jet is original to the stock engine, once properly cleaned up and adjusted, you'll never find another that performs as well.
thanks for the thought. I already orderd one from Book Depository. seems like a really good book for understanding the rochester.
Read the book, order parts from CLiff and he makes himself available for any technical advise by phone, super nice guy! Good Luck with the build!
