I just can't wrap my arms around twin turbos mounted like a couple big snails on pedistals. Can't they be mounted behind rear wheels like they do with the vettes?
Will still be a very hard sell for heads that only flow 208 in. CFM out of the box! Would be easier to sell someone on a sbb 300 stroker with the TA Rover heads, those at least flow 225 in. CFM out of the box.
Evidently the heads need the additional porting to flow the best they can, but that can be said about many different brands out there. For some, well ported irons will be adequate for mild to moderate street use. That's all we've had to work with. Everyone that wants and can afford a set will eventually buy them. Look how well the SP3 seems to be selling..... it's the best manifold we have for these 350's. Thank TA for another custom made product!
That's somewhat true, unfortunately the sbb 350 has around 70 to 120 or more cubic inches to feed than those other engines!
still more flow than stock and lighter, that will still be an improvement over non ported heads. most people do not have ported heads.
Here is unported sbb 350 numbers; Buick 350 Rick Crawford Iron N/A Stock N/A .100") 55/44 .200") 112/100 .300") 165/119 .400")199/137 .500")196/146 .600")199/149 Taken from this database website; http://www.users.interport.net/s/r/srweiss/tablehdc.htm So.......... 208 - 199 = 9 CFM more of max intake flow! Now if the compression ratio isn't raised at least by 1:1 when the heads are installed with everything else the same the performance will actually be less than the iron heads that came off! An awful lot of $$ for less performance without springing for the extra for porting if you ask me.
Stop searching the internet and return my head sections!!!! What amount of HP would those stock flow number support? So basically the intake stops at .400" and the exhaust continues to gain until .600" From this it would appear more help is needed on the intake side than the exhaust side. I wonder how this would change with iron manifolds bolted on?
These are Gesslers stock head numbers. Thought that 199 @ .400 seemed off on Crawfords chart. Don't forget, stock cfm is probably with stock size valves too....
Out of box intake flow is listed at 222 cfm at .500 lift on TA website. I don’t understand where you are getting the 208 cfm number from
out of the air look up, I guess the only way to find out is bolt on a set and see what happens. Yeah it's a lot of money, Do You see the 455 guy's complaining about the price they have twice as much power as a 350 So why would they need those Alum heads with all the power they have already. I know, I want Alum heads on my engine because they are better!.
Actually from this very thread that TA Mike Jr. posted as the before porting flow over 30 pages ago; I was 10 CFM off so I apologize for that and also forgetting the updated numbers that were around 20 pages ago; Well above are the TA iron head numbers that max out @ 194 CFM so the heads that were tested that went 199 that port could of been the "good" port that was tested on that head because as cast will vary. So it is possible that the factory heads probably vary from as low as 180 to as high as 210?(with the majority falling in the middle of those numbers) The biggest problem I have is that the BBB TA al. heads flow more than the best ported BBB iron heads do right out of the box(very nice job on those heads), while the TA sbb 350 heads barely flow more than unported factory heads. So they flow around 20 CFM more than unported cast iron heads, whoop de do! If they are bolted on as is with no compression bump then they're going to perform basically the same as the iron heads that came off. A lot of $$ for zero gain, Are you saying the TA sbb 350 heads work on the engines you posted? Because that is what is being discussed here.
I re-opened the thread because there is a lot of good information in this. My request though is PLEASE have a little respect for TA and let’s make this thread full of actual information and alum head testing instead of condemning the heads before we can utilize them.
Probably the right move. And Derek... no sense in being intentionally obtuse. It's entirely reasonable to mention the TA/Rover heads for purposes of comparison and I'm sure you know that's what I was doing. Are you OK with that? We can just let it slide? Jim
