I have 76 motor that I want to swap heads with a "70" pair of heads. I'm looking for viable cores for rebuild within 200 miles of Minneapolis, MN. I'm on a budget and can't afford "ready to install" items, nor do I want to install aluminum heads. I'm looking to spend $100 or less per head. And then my 8 year old daughter and I will take our time to tear down, clean, rebuild, and install on the block. Thanks!
I don't think you can use pre 73 heads on a 73 and newer block due to the coolant passage casting in the middle of the block. It would leave an open for coolant to pour out inside. Also, the Air Injection (smog) ports are different too on the intake manifold area.
Isn't the block have the larger clean out ports? and two scallops? Hey that is why I put up the first pat " I DON'T THINK" I wasn't sure. Haven't had to deal with the hewer block and or head. Just remembered the technical bulletin vaguely.
I have a set of '73 heads in case you decide to go that route. Located near Milwaukee. I'd do $75 for the pair if interested.
You can use a 70 head on any 455, you can not use a 73 and Later head on an early blocks unless you thread and plug one of the water ports in the Deck of the Head. I have a set of 70 heads. Phoenix, AZ
Thanks....I may be in touch. There's someone closer to me that has some options. Looks like those may work out. If not, I'll be in touch.
You may want to expand your search to include 67-69 400 & 430 heads. Pretty much the same casting as the 70 heads. You may even find a set of big port heads too.
Have access to (2) '71 coded long blocks. Believe head castings are "186" last three numbers. Will have to confirm. Would request customer have magnaflux done before ship, not interested in shipping defective parts. Have local shop contacts here. Shipping / handling / transport to and from machine shop / and magnaflux would be chargeable to customer. Am guessing these heads should be sourceable in upper midwest, anyway. Dave S.
