Looking for new wheels for my 67-presently has Keystone mags, period correct, but I want to go back to original. Would like the correct/original wheel-Code 813, JK code. If not available anyone purchased a reproduction rally wheel and what is your opinion of the repos? All made by same company or are there different manufacturers? In looking online appears cost per wheel approx $250-$400 altho not sure I see the difference in the wheels. Center cap--best source for the reproduction--believe the ribbed cap is what I need. Any suggestions/help appreciated. Thanks Rod
Bide your time. 14x6 rallies often pop up in driver shape for short money. There are at least three versions with visible differences. There’s a shallow offset, deeper offset, and painted (not chrome) with trim rings. All should have black pockets. Yours, I think, should be all chrome and have no lip between the center and the hoop. Later versions from the ‘70s and ‘80s have a dime sized lip but look great unless you’re very picky. Your center caps should be ribbed with a red background and skinny bird if it’s a Skylark, black background and trishield if it’s a Special or GS. ScubaSteve’s are worth a look... Patrick
appreciate your response and info Patrick. Patience not my long suit but I've had the keystones on it since I purchased some 10 years ago. Found in 2011 I posted looking for wheels and didn't have any luck. Hopefully this time I will. Lost interest in the interim and sure I missed opportunity to get the wheels I wanted. Mine is a GS so I do need the ribbed center cap and trishield. When you mention ScubaSteve I not sure of reference as I don't find any caps from him for sale. Could you clarify? Thanks again Rod
He posted above that he has wheels. Centers are available from many sources; Mitch Romanowski on the board here makes very nice ones. He also has the correct nuts. https://buickcenters.com/index.html Patrick
Patrick-Sorry-for some reason didn't register. Appreciate the heads up. Scuba Steve--Would be interested as I need spare anyway. I'm in Oklahoma City, 73131-Let me know cost to ship to me and give me an idea of condition please. Post a photo? Thanks for offer Rod
OK, If memory serves me correct the only wheel available for the 67 Buicks with disc brakes was the "Chevy Style Rallye wheels with the Buick centers. Just wanted to make sure the rims you were asking for would fit your car. Duane
Duane-Thanks for info. Anyone have experience with AKH Vintage Wheels in state of Washington. Terry Rowe is the owner. Communicating with him about 4 wheels he has. Says backspace is about 4" --- how much difference does it make between the modern repos which have 3 1/2" backspace and the originals for my 67 which had 4 1/2?
Here’s a chart. The difference will be invisible to most people; the original offset will be tucked into the wheelwells like original. The shallower offset will look a little bit more agressive but not ‘wrong’ at all. Check your backspace on the Cragars; it’s probably 3 1/2”. (I have later, shallower 14s on my ‘68 and like them). http://www.v8buick.com/index.php?threads/official-guide-to-rally-wheels-chart.196455/ Patrick
Patrick the keystones mags are 15" and have 215/65R Winston Winner G/T tires and they rub on the rear on occasion. I have air rear shocks and when I add enough air that seems to help the rubbing. That is one of the reasons I want to change to original. When you say offset your referring to the indent on the outside of the wheel and not the backspace on interior side of wheel is that correct? My plan is to get 14 x 6 wheels and put wide ovals, F70 x 14 on the wheels. The guy at AKH Vintage says: "Where the problems lie is in the backspacing. Most of the ones out there today are the 3.25" to 3.5" backspacing. The early wheels require right at a 4" backspacing to clear fender skirts and for the correct offset under the car for looks." The new repops do have 3.5" backspacing but I would assume that would not be a problem with the wide ovals, thoughts? The originals had 4.5" backspacing. I certainly don't want to put new wheels/tires on and have a rubbing issue. Believe the wheels available from AHK are for 73-77 14" and not really interested in those. I'll keep looking and see what comes available. Thanks Rod
. I have a friend who ran 15x7 rallies on a ‘65 with the F70 redlines and had no trouble, so I would think any of the Buick 14” rallies would be fine, but I also am surprised that a 215/65 rubbed. Unless those Keystones are 7 or 8” wide and have a 3-3.5” offset.(?) Patrick
I still have some 14x6 steel wheels. I will check them. I know I sold the ones that cleared disc brakes. These ones only fit drums.
