Hi. I need to replace my water pump for my 1966 Skylark. The engine is a 455 1972. Please see pictures. Is this the long or short style water pump ? I am considder using the TA performance high flow water pump. Thanks
Check the part number of your pulley - if it's 1235778, then you know for sure it's long, if it's something else, you can match it ot the long/short application here: http://www.buickperformanceclub.com/455pulleybrkts.htm
If you want to be 100% take off the pulley and fan and measure from the gasket flange against the timing cover to the face of the pulley mounting hub. If you get 3 1/4" it's the short body if you get 3 7/8" it's the long body. See diagram below.
Another way is to disconnect the clutch/fan together. Look at the water pump shaft extension beyond the clutch mounting surface. If it is 1", it's the long pump, 1/2", the short pump.
Two things I'm seeing: 1. Are the belts correct? The two belts on the water pump pulley seem to be at different depths in the pulley grooves. One belt seems loose. 2. Is the fan too deep in the shroud? None of the photos show it clearly, but I get the impression that the fan is almost all the way in the shroud. Maybe a photo from different angle would prove me wrong.
Thanks 1. The belts are brand new, and they are the same, I have not started the engine after installing them. The inner belt was not good, so i replaced both. Yes, something is wrong. I think the grooves may be worn. I will start the engine and re tighten the belts and see. I might get som new pulleys. Is this a common problem ? (worn grooves) 2. The fan have 2/3 inside shroud, and 1/3 outside the shroud. I belive that is correct ?
2/3 OUT, 1/3 in would be better. 1/2 in, 1/2 out is as deep as the fan should go. An automotive fan blows a lot of air outward, not just backward. Shielding the fan by putting it too deeply into the shroud hampers flow.
Not to disagree with others here, But that looks to be a short shaft, The 455 is a tight fit in the 64-67 skylarks, And requires the short shaft water pump. That setup looks exactly like mine does, (65 455) Edit, I just found a pic of my setup, I stand corrected that apears to be the long setup, Ill post a pic of my setup as soon as I can get it off my phone, Im only running one belt to the alternator. and A47 belt,
After one more look i see that half of the fan blade are inside the shroud. The shroud are repro fiberglass and not that good quality, and not the same right/left upper/bottom
Thanks. I think i will try to use one belt (the outer). The inner belt is deep, probably because worn grooves in the pulleys.
