I have mounted a MSD 7530 and my stock tach acted funny, would work at idle but worked funny with higher rpm. I have now mounted a tach adapter per MSD direction, but now it only moves the needle around 2-300 rpm and no more. I would like to keep the stock tach for stealth look, instead of mounting an aftermarket tach. Any recommendations what to do? Thanks
The stock tachometer is unreliable and inaccurate. The only solution is to send it out and have a shop install modern guts in the stock tach housing. It is on my list to do as well. Until then, install an Autometer tach in the stock location.
https://www.autometer.com/3-3-8-tach-8-000-rpm-4-6-8-cyl-in-dash.html I installed it into a clock housing so that I could bolt it to the back of the dash bezel like stock. http://www.v8buick.com/index.php?threads/autometer-tach-install.343030/
Not all stock tachs are inaccurate. Some will calibrate very, very well. Some have non-linearities that will be accurate at some rpm ranges, and be off in others (like Larry's ). Those are hard to predict and correct, but they are in the minority
I have 2 brand new repros I never could get to work. Bought them both second hand here (never installed supposedly) but they don't work with my ignition with or without an msd tach adapter. Thought about rigging up a test harness on the white car to see if it's theyre good or not.
Yes I do. It's an inexpensive summit brand one I've had kicking around for years, but the numbers are somewhat close to stock, it fits perfectly, and it has a small adjustable shift light which I like.
This is the only one i could find, https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-g2969/overview/ Don't see a shift light though, and not exactly inexpensive. How about this one? https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-g29105/overview/ Is that the one you have Shawn? It's 3 1/2", 1/8" bigger than the 3 3/8" tach that I have.
Looks like this one. May be an older version though, again, it's been hanging around for a while. But it's got the dial and light in the same spot. If i can get time to go out and climb up the lift I'll get pics. But I'm fairly certain that's it.
Jan, I haven't been able to find my documentation on the tach, but it is in fact the one Larry linked. Again, it's not a super nice high end one, but checks out accurate. I installed as a temporary one to get me by after the repro tach fiasco and it's been in there for 4 years now. Funny how that works. My only complaint with it is I wish the summit logo wasn't there, but oh well, it serves it's purpose for now.
If the tach worked fine with the stock ignition, but now does not work with the dedicated tach output of the MSD box plus MSD filter, then no, I can't currently help.
