I recently purchased a nos grille for my 70' GS my old grille appears to have been painted flat black grids the new one is grey plastic....what is the proper finish for a nos GS grille ? thank you Pat
What are you guys using as far as paint black and the grey silver. Spray paint brand codes???? I need to redo mine one day. Any tips on prep?
Hector, It appears that someone has painted your grille all silver. There are 3 colors on the grille. Bright silver for the grille. Charcoal/ argent for the squares. Semi flat black for the recessed areas. Dave
The paint code I used was the 35146 neutral argent bottom right of the chart. This was the color on a 1994 GMC Jimmy grille I owned at one time. GM and Ford used this on grilles throughout the years. I think the Pontiac wheel paint is close. I have not compared the two side by side. . .
Dave, But reading the chain, wasn't black put only late production and NOS? Can any one post pics of a correct early production grill, showing tone of different grey/silver/argent.
The black you are talking about is the plastic the grille was made from. Original 70 GS grilles were made from grey ABS plastic. Later replacement GM grilles were made from black ABS plastic. The two pictures posted below are correct.
Most of Eastwood’s stuff is Lacquer. I have used the Alumablast for the silver and I think I used a spray gray they sell for the grill part. Satin black I used under hood black. The Alumablast works great on tail light lenses too.
Krylon paints work fine on grills too if you can find a match. All of these are good for a budget paint job that will last if you don’t want the hassle of firing up a paint gun and the mess that goes with it. You don’t need any primers on grills if you use these paints.
Not to hijack but I'm trying to resurrect some 69 headlight bezels to driver quality and need some argent for the center portions. I need a part number and where to buy or a close hardware store grade part number approved by someone who prefers not to grab the first can that says "silver". No offense to anyone who's not as anal as me.
When I restored my ‘70 GS grille, I contacted Gran Sport Auto Body for the correct colors. Attached is an illustration of what they sent me.
