Air shock vs. Air bag...

I like the air shocks but I keep having to "top them off" because they lose air, especially after towing the trailer. I'm considering Air lift air bags that fit inside the coil spring....only if it a better option. Anyone have thoughts on them? Do those lose air as well?

Everything leaks, it's just a matter of leak rate. Are you trying to maintain a constant ride height? If so, that the job of your rear coil springs, not shock absorbers or air bags. New springs will do that job, then you can choose the right NON-air shocks for ride comfort.

It has new springs already. My air shocks leak about 10psi every two-three weeks. 60psi gives the perfect sitting, 50 and it looks like the trunk is filled with rocks. So I'm wondering if one) will they leak as much, and 2) can I still raise the back of the car the inch or so it needs to sit "pretty".

Sorry, sounds like you need some different springs. You might get a bit of lift from air bags, but it doesn't help you solve the root cause of your problem.

I think your mistaking my preference for how I want the vehicle to look outside of what the factory setting is. Thats ok, I may not be wording it correctly. Let me put it this way.

I want to raise the back end an inch and the air shocks do that...but they leak down about 10psi every two weeks. Do Air Lift 1000 Air Bags have ability to lift an inch and do they bleed down that much?

I don't know if it helps, but years ago my car had the same problem with ride height, and I wanted a little more rise. I installed what are called "cargo springs", they look like this (original on the left, "cargo" on the right in this photo)

The result was about an inch up compared to stock:

air shocks are trouble especially if your towing. it's not uncommon for the upper shock mount to rip through the frame. you are supporting a tremendous amount on very little meat. i would wager strongly you are distorting the frame badly. it's not designed to support that much weight in such a small area. you'd be much better off with finding the right springs or air bags.

I have Air Lift air bags on my 68 GS400. So far they have been great. I have had them for 2 1/2 years and they have not lost any air yet. I was worried about having to "top them off" all the time but they just don't seem to leak. I put 18psi in them after I installed them and I checked them a few weeks ago and they still have 18psi in them. I use them to get the ride height I want and you can easily adjust your ride height 0-4 inches or more with them.

The bags are better than the air shocks, and the load will be in the correct places.

Perfect thanks! I wanted to get out of the air shocks if I could. The trailer I tow is never more than 2000lbs loaded(including trailer weight) so I only need to get it up about an inch. I'll install the bags this next weekend.

What are typical pressures to use for cruising and for drag racing with bags?

I have air-lift bags in my rear coil springs, and keep them lightly inflated to 15-20psi to help tighten up the ride.

I just run 18psi in mine. That gives me the ride height that I want. I have not raced this car so I can't really comment on PSI for racing other than you would probably want about 5 PSI more in the right bag than in the left.
