I was wondering what was causing that noise? Lol Where can I get the oversize bolts? Do I simply go up one size? I think I may need a cap screw instead of a bolt? Also what type off shocks are the best for a sport driver? Thanks, Mike
Those frame mounts are self tapping. You could try one size larger self tapping allen head if the bracket interferes with a regular hex head bolt. Also, you can get a rivet nut that should do the trick.
It is basically a giant pop rivet with a threaded center. Look at this guy's thread. They make them out of several different materials. You could also tack weld one in if you get a steel one. http://www.78ta.com/HTAF/index.php?topic=41181.0
Am I correct in that the original threads were 5/16"? I think the 1972/4 TransAM donor is 3/8". Drill and tap 3/8"?
I've not done this particular fix before but this is the process. If you have a Fastenal or a Grainger around, you can probably take your original bolt in and get one sized to match. We have a local place similar to those called Diamond Screw and they have more stuff than I could ever think up a use for.
I'll be good. The lesson is you need full strength on both bolts. The one stripped at the last bit and I hoped it would be ok. Not
You can get a set of urethane bushing and brackets from Energy. Notice how the bracket and bushing interlock together http://www.energysuspensionparts.com/universal-sway-bar-bushings.asp
The bar shown is an upgrade and fit tightly, in diameter from the TA donor. The challenge is the mounting spacing on the 69 is less than what you need for the larger bar. Does the bushing look to large for the TA backet.
I did, the mounting pattern is much wider. I am working on just going up to 3/8"from the self tapping 5/16". It just stripped at the last minute and I left it. Now its first in line.
I used the Energy Suspension bushings, brackets (with slotted mounting holes) and end links, all with polyurethane on my 1970 and 1971 without any issues. You will likely need to use an allen head bolt so that you can tighten them down properly. All of it was available in stock at my local Advance Auto a few years ago.
I ran into a similar issue trying to use the larger 1.25" trans am bar but keeping the stock bracket look. I ended up using a WS6 bracket and a bushing that fit but had to trim it in height with a razor knofe
Do you recall how much you reduced the height by? I installed them TIGHT using the jack to compress the rubber. The TA brackets almost look stock. My plan now is, recall my 5/16" frame thread is stripped. Do I simply drill oversize for a 3/8" self tapping bolts?
