Im sure the answer is yes however I have a couple questions. The car is a 72 GS350 we are doing a Father son project on. I have a spare low compression stock 455 complete that we will replace the old worn out 350 with. The question is what problems may we run into if we use the TH350 trans if any. Trying to keep this simple and economical. Will the converter bolt up properly? Or should I get a new converter all together? If so is there any special detail when mating a 455 to a TH350 Thanks for any advice. Dennis
I have seen a TH350 case broken by a 403. A TH400 would stand up to a lot more abuse. Not a pure bolt up, but I have swapped a few. Bruce Roe
Thanks guys, From what I gather it should go in just fine as the turbo 350 is the transmission that this car came with and in place with Cable, etc. I get mixed responses on the strength of a 350, I remember that alot of people used these for drag racing exclusively. I had one in a street/strip mid 10 sec chevelle for years and made run after run without issue. thanks guys for the input! Dennis
My car has a turbo 350 with a slightly modified 455. And handles it well. It is actually the turbo 350 that came with car but i rebuilt it. Someone changed the 350 to a 455 before i got my hands on it. Been using it since 2005 like this.
Nothing really to loose by leaving the th350 in place... If you have an issue with it later then rebuild it or swap to a th400. I have a th350 in my car that is holding up to the twin turbo 350 and has been for years and years.
My 350 has been behind three motors now, raced and street driven since 1991 with no issues so far but I am sure my luck is bound to run out sooner or later. Trans is stock other than a stall converter and shift kit. 91 - 98 behind my built 350 running 13.20's 99 - 2011 behind my 462 running 11:90, I did bust the case the very first time out to the track because I had rubber motor and trans mounts. Pulled the guts and put them in another case and away I went after some solid motor mounts. 2016 I tossed it in behind my fresh 462 a few months ago and so far only have 400 miles or so on this combo but I hope to see 11:50' once I get to the track.
I thought it was just the opposite, solid trans mounts break cases. Solid motor mounts put a lot of stress on the block, not a good idea with the thin walled casting BBB.
I never thought of it that way, all I knew back in 99 was the rubber mounts let the trans smack the tunnel and broke the trans, they were brand new mounts. I took them out and plated each side of the mount to make them solid and ran it that way for 12 years. Guess I better look into this one some more.
