Ive always used red 1/4" tape stripe to stripe the rockers on my cars. But in looking at my build sheet I noticed it specifies that the stripes are supposed to be orange. I always thought they were red. Then again most of the stripes were worn off by the time I got ahold of the car. I think they wore off by 1975! Can anyone confirm what the exact color is supposed to be? I can tell you that they look damn good in red:bla:
All the original ones I have are orange,...faded? Supposed to be? , but I agree I use red to match the emblems, and I've got a few 71 GS grill emblems that are orange as can be and evenly so
All my original rockers had orange paint stripes, however, I too use paint that matches the emblems for those stripes. The correct orange is available from Duplicolor.
I am with everyone here. I see them as all orange but I use the red tape also to match the emblems. I have also used Black tape for a different look.
Just did a set today. They really do come out sweet with the red and boy do they pop on the car! The before and after is striking!
Is tape the most common way to do this? I have a set I am about to do and I planned on using paint. I have never done them before but are painted from the factory so I planned on taping them off and spraying them. Would this not be better?
Its common practice to use the tomato red tape stripe although it seems its really supposed to be "tangerine" The tape is soooo much easier. Took me 15 minutes to lay them on from start to finish once I had the rockers cleaned, polished and prepared
I believe I picked up mine at O Reillys. I did my GS rockers with the red tape and my GSX with the black tape. I had repainted the GS rocker trim about 6 years ago and the paint on the GS rockers was slowly flaking off. This tape looks really good and it is a fast install. Rich
The tape is so much easier to apply than paint, and will probably last longer, regardless of color. I used a 3M black vinyl, sign shop, lettering material for the painted portion of the lower moldings on my Riviera that run the full length of the car. They look as good today, as they did when they were applied some 25+ years ago ! :TU:
The DuPont store I frequented a few decades ago had a book with every code known to man and monkey, including the GS rocker stripes. I don't have the code handy, but it is the same as 1969-1970 Corvette Monza Red. I compared it to an NOS grill emblem and NOS rocker molding and it was a perfect match. UPDATE: DuPont 5027, GM WA3894, Ditzler 2089
The Buick red engine color is a nice match to the side emblems on my car, we just did a set with Duplicolor DH1608 paint. Glen
Monza red is darn near the same if not the red Also on the GSX stripes . Also appears to come close to the rocker panels on GS
Here's a tip when using tape. After applying your red tape stripe, apply a slight coat of clear nail polish (borrow it from your lady) to each end of your tape. Just overlap the tape about an 1/8" and an 1/8" on the stainless. This seals the ends of your tape and prevents it from coming loose at each end. It will eventually peel up if you don't seal it! :TU:
My son and I were just talking about that trim piece. Mine is currently Black but the red looks sweet. is there any prep required before you lay the strip down with the tape. and am I right in assuming that the tape is a form of Pin stripping? Thanks Chris
