First time on forum, glad I found it. My. 72 Buick centurion convertible died on me over the weekend. Began missing while climbing some roads, ran fine downhill and in the flats. It would start back for just a second, then die again. It did seem a little hot, but not boiling. After a ride on the rollback home, I could start it and put in the garage. Seems like a fuel issue, but can't find any problems. A little history, engine seemed to want to die on right hand turns while going uphill, I installed new carb 2 years ago, helped but didn't totally stop. Again, only happens when engine is working hard and on right hand turns until this weekend when totally died in a long uphill climb. Not much to go on, any help would be appreciated
Several questions. 1. What type of carburetor? 2. What was the "new" carburetor you put on 2 years ago? 3. What kind of car? 4. Have you replaced your rubber sections of fuel hose between tank and fuel pump? 5. Do you have vented gas cap on the tank?
Thanks for your reply, carb was new Rochester, could not find an oem, and couldn't find anyone to rebuild original car is a 72 Buick centurion with a 455-4 barrel I have not replaced the rubber hose gas cap is vented.
"new" rochester. Quadrajet? Do you know the code stamp on driver side main body? If you purchased from a large retail store, then there is possibly serious issues inside the carburetor itself. Some things that can cause issues are: float level Needle/seat accelerator pump If it is commercially remanufactured, then the circuits have probably all been altered to make it generic.
It was a big box store replacement. I'll like for the code stamp later. Where can I find another carb if I need to.
I can build you a correct 72 Buick 455 Quadrajet. There are others on the board as well. Since you indicate you were pulling hard and it was a little warm, you may have experienced vapor lock. This fuel today has ethanol added and is quicker to boil when hot, and causes problems. Make sure to check your entire fuel delivery system as well.
Good evening all. I have a 72' Lesabre 350-4. In front of the carb, it says Holley. the previous owner side it was rebuilt. Is it a quad? If it is not, then what holley is it? Thank you!
