My local paint joint recommends ppg dbc with the dc4000 clear.... the base I am contemplating is a Chrysler Deep Cherry Red Crystal Pearl that another forum member had painted his 68 skylark that looked good I asked them for the best quality and they went for the jugular total of about $1500 after all the reducers/hardeners ou: and also anybodies opinion on that dc4000 clear ?? they also carry the BASF diamont line but that setup would save me about 3 bills plus then I also like that HOK Brandywine color look...:Brow:....and its a much cheaper setup
Nothing wrong with the PPG line except the price .My shop went from PPG DBC to RM Diamont line a few years back .Same quality and colors available but 30% cheaper. If you want the very best clear check out SPI Southern Polyurethanes.
Great product and the 4000 clear is nice to use but yea it hurts to lay the coin down. I use General in my shop and love it they have a "Blackfire" and their "4000" both are awesome clears that id put against ANYONES product, ive sprayed them all at some point. $220 for a 5qt kit , and a gallon of Chrysler code "prp" runs about $600. Diamont base is probably the best spraying ,acting, and matching base imo, I had a Diamont machine for a couple years but cost and the fact that its a very hot base made me look elsewhere, by hot I mean it used to be very particular about the surface its applied over ive heard they have toned it down but a reactive reducer base such as Diamont offers the best adhesion
yea I see other forums bragging about that SPI clear ....I imagine it would lay no problem over other brands of base coat ??
so you would put that BASF Diamont up there with PPG Dbc quality ? also contemplating that HOK Brandywine ...I will be painting my car all apart ...as a novice painter would you suggest that one ? I dont know ....when watching them guys lay down candy color on youtube it looks easy
A true candy coat isn't "easy" and I wouldn't encourage a novice to try it. Its not persay difficult but not something to learn with either, but as to.putting any clear on any base, I don't suggest it and nor will any paint manufacturer, have I done it? You bet I have, has it bit me in the butt ,? a few times yea it has. There are only a handful of resin suppliers in the world but im a firm believer in using the same product line from start to finish, if anything for the peace of mind in knowing that if something happens the supplier will make it right, and if its a quality product you can request a lifetime warranty card and they will stand behind it for the term of ownership some even beyond. And yes RM Diamont is a quality product and equal in quality to PPG, Sherwin,ICI, etc etc. Its moreso prep and applications than the product but it is comforting to know you spent a lot of time prepping why use a second line product. Same goes the other way if its not a top level quality prep job/substrate why waste big bucks on it.
I go with a medium quality base coat and spend my money on the clear coat. I've used ppg Omni base coat almost exclusively and have sprayed the dc3000 and 4000 which are both fine, just be careful not to go too heavy on the clear.
We've been spraying R-M Diamont for 23 years, switched from PPG DBC, and never looked back. I would rate Diamont b/c easily superior to DBC, and it's more affordable. I would say the only advantage to DBC is that their color is more concentrated so it hides in fewer coats. For clear, I've heard nothing but good about Glasurit (also a BASF product), although we've never sprayed it because at a $40/hour material rate, a person can't use the best clear. I wouldn't recommend any 3 stage color for something being sprayed apart. It would be just luck to get the panels to match each other. 3 stage colors are difficult even spraying complete.
I am having feeling for this color also ....many choices here in the red department high octane red 2014 dodge color ...or would you call this one more maroon like
Frank see if that Jobber that gave you price for PPG Carries Nexa Autocolor Clear 193. PPG bought the company 16 yrs. ago I have been spraying this clear for 30 yrs. it's awesome! Should be cheaper. I know it's better! Painted my GS stage 1 wa 3967 did not wet sand or buff car! It is the bomb ! It's a concourse level car. In my mind. Have not sprayed PPG ever! I know everone loves their paint. But I've always sprayed the European paints my whole live. We have our own Nexa mixing bank. Also have Spies Hecker water mixing bank and Sikkens mixing bank.
Its coming close to crunch time for me ..the base will be the DBC the clearcoat is still up for grabs .....the b/c is easy to me its the c/c that worries me the most being my first time bc/cc ..so one more time please ...doing research is simply more confusion in the mix ou: Money is not the issue on the c/c its a project I am not worried about "cost per ounce of sprayable material " What I need (think I need) is High solids and I need plenty of flash time in between coats (car is all apart) easy to spray with a Sata 3000 HVLP 1.3 tip. Being painted in clean garage makeshift booth with filtered air coming and fanned out across chest height /air dry and leaves less or no orange peel ,Good pot life dont want to rush I am not worried if it wet sands easy or hard ......longevity /quality is key what say you ? or am I simply overreacting and just buy what the paint store pushes ?
Also ...I have about a dozen small dime size or less spots of bare metal that showed up during block sanding the primer fill I also have 2 different colors of primer fill I used that showed up here and there (Black & cream) so I would like to shoot 1 coat of primer seal on it ..... should I just use some of the PPG epoxy I have left over reduced for it or buy a few quarts of a dedicated primer sealer ?
Use either ppg 2021 or the 4000, you can either use the Shop line sealer it the omni sealer or cut the DP epoxy and use as a sealer, both these clears are top shelf and buff excellent don't concern yourself with trying to slick it up to much just spray 4 nice even coats, a nice even orange peel is what you want when you are planning to buff
It sounds like you are budget minded, but still want a nice job. I would suggest looking at a 2007 GM color 379E(code86). This is basically a tri-coat color that is used on high end GM cars like Cadillac or Buick. It appears to be nearly identical to the Chrysler color you have pictured. The good news is that this color is available as a single stage basecoat (single meaning you do not spray the pearl separately)in the cheaper PPG brand which is OMNI. It is not a true single stage paint because you will still clear it,but you will duplicate the pearl color without spending major bucks.
I'm liking the pot life on the 2021 /4 hrs .... the 2021 gives me 1.5 gallons sprayable ,you think that's enough for 4 coats ?
