Picked this project up less than a month ago and it's about time to give the wiring some attention. Not much in the electrical system is working other than what is needed for the car to run. Story I got from the previous owner is that when the car went to the body shop, they disconnected everything to paint and he got it back like it is. I would like to start with the headlights, horn and turn signals. I also have an extra headlight wiring harness from another 67 Buick just in case. It's not exact but a lot of the connectors are the same. I also know that the relay that should be on the drvs side fender well was missing. I pulled one from the junk yard when I pulled the wiring harness. Turn signals are missing all together. Turn signals light up solid on dash when turned on and today I got power to the turn signal wires in the engine compartment. Thats actually how I determined they were the turn signal wires. I'm not an expert but understand basic wiring and electricity. I also have a test light ready to work. :laugh: So, where do I start?
No, I've been looking for one. I started a thread last week asking what are the no BS manuals I need. I got no response so I held off on buying. I do have a schematic printout that looks to cover everything.

Alright folks, I'm back and ready to go. I've been out for a while training. I don't have much time remaining and would like to get out to a few cruises and shows before I deploy to the Stan. I now have the shop manual with schematics. I'm going to document all troubleshooting in this forum so you all can chime in when possible. Oh, finally have my antique plates, my first. Excited!
I replaced a few connectors by using a spare harness I have. Also repaired a few exposed area of wire. No power to lights. Hot wire to horn has constant voltage as it should. Need to get a new low beam light tomorrow, one of the prongs broke off. I may use some epoxy to hold it during troubleshooting. Good part is I'm becoming familiar with the wiring and schematics. :bglasses:
Thanks for the info. I have a paper copy now. i have 12.25 volts from the 12v wire going into the fuse box. I'll also add that I'm having a hard time keeping a charge on the battery. I found the terminals a bit loose so I tightened them and I'll keep an eye on it. Maybe an additional problem. I'm getting power to the left side turn signal, on the dash and parking lamp/signal harness. It does not flash, just solid voltage. I have no power to the same harness with parking lights or headlights on. Haven't checked passenger side yet. fuel gage works fine. I disconnected the forward lamp harness from the fuse block and inspected. Looks as it should. Found a partially blown wiper fuse and a blown cig lighter fuse. Now the back light for the dash is working. Still no head lights, parking or tail/stop lights. I'm done for tonight. Starting to narrow down to switch but I still have a few other checks.
Check the wiring to the starter. Along with the +battery cable are the 2 main feed wires for the car. One feeds the headlights only, the other feeds the rest of the car. Both have fusible links. look "fusible links" up in the index of your chassis manual and read up.
Inspected battery electrolyte level and terminals. Checked out good. completed hydrometer test of all battery cells. All tested good to fair. Just located the fusible link, not connected and only one wire attached. The wire attached to the fusible link is the red 12g wire. The other black wire coming off the fusible link pigtail is burnt and severed. ---------- Post added at 02:54 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:17 PM ---------- On the schematics I see a yellow wire that runs off the starter on a separate terminal. I can't find what that runs too because it continues on another page, one that I'm missing. What does it run too?
The yellow wire from the starter runs to the coil +. It tees into the resistance wire for the points. It bypasses the resistance wire during cranking only.
Ok, managed to find the correct 14/16 fusible links close by. Back to the garage. ---------- Post added at 04:55 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:03 PM ---------- When looking at the starter from the front.......12 v from bat is on top terminal, tan 10 gauge wire to smaller right terminal, yellow wire to lower left terminal. Does the tan wire go to the fusible link? Also I can't locate a purple wire, which I see on the schematic. meanwhile, I'm gonna peal back this insulation completely and start tracing.
There is one big lug on the starter solenoid. That lug gets the positive battery cable AND the 2 feed wires. The 2 feed wires are 10 gauge, and 12 gauge. Those are the wires with fusible links. The smaller is just the headlights. The larger is for everything else. Both of those wires go on the big lug. The other wires are purple and yellow, and they are much smaller with smaller ring terminals. Looking head on to the solenoid, the yellow goes to the left terminal, the purple goes to the right terminal. Look in the Wiring Circuit diagrams in your Chassis manual. There should be a diagram labeled "Starter and Battery Cable Installation"
Got all the insulation off entire harness. Smaller lugs on solenoid are correct. The purple wire faded to tan in color. Now to find the other wire for the fusible link.
Fusible links are done. I have power to parking lights, front and rear. I don't have bulbs in, but I have power to the connectors. Also have juice going to rear tail lights with head light switch to on. Still no power to headlights.
I now have low beam, high beam, power to parking lights and turn signals (no connectors) front and rear, tail lights and brake lights (sort of). With the lights on, the drivers side tail light goes out completely when the brake is pressed or turn signal applied. In general the drivers side tail light is much dimmer than the other. Good call. I'm also replacing light connectors while I'm working on the wiring. Is the parking light socket up front the same as the rear?
