Can anyone please advise me on whether it is possible to put a 3 spoke rally-style steering wheel on a 66 GS?? (Here is a link to the wheel I would like to mount http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?255281-15-quot-Rally-Steering-Wheel-horn-button-and-contacts ) If this IS doable, can someone please recommend a quality aftermarket kit and adapter? Looking for Red... but black would do Many thanks in advance!
I think the answer is yes, as I have put one on my 67. What you would need is to find a hub for a wood wheel. It is a smaller diameter. The ones for 69 up would overlap the diameter of the steering column. May have a wheel if you are looking. Color. Fred
Got a red one, and the horn button, as well as used contacts. I'll look and see if I have a hub, but I think they are repro'd I'll get back to you tomorrow, and will post pics.
Yes you need a hub off a 68. The part place has them and then you need to turn it down to the size of the 66 column bowel. I have done this on a 65 and 66 GS and it looks nice. I can post pictures of the 65. You need a 68 hub not the 69 because if you turn down the 69 you will have a large gap between the hub and bowel. FYI the 67 and 68 bowel is the same size and 65/6 are smaller. Thanks Bill.
Thanks Bill! what exactly do you mean by "you need to turn it down to the size of the 66 column bowel"? do you have a photo? thanks, Mark
Mark, you need to use a metal lathe and turn the outside of the 68 hub down to the size of the 66 steering column bowel. I will get the wheels out and take a picture or two of the 68 wheel and hub and the one turned to the 66 size, thanks Bill.
Mark, here are the pictures of the wheels, the black hub is a 68 hub and it fits my 7 GS. The silver one is the one that was turned down to the size of the 66 bowel. The stock hub size is about 3.92" diameter The turned down one is about 3.62" diameter Hope this helps, Thanks Bill.
Thanks Fred. PM Sent ---------- Post added at 06:48 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:47 PM ---------- Helps a lot. Thanks Bill
The correct size hubs are available. I know I posted years ago, but can't find it now. Some Corvette hubs are the right size, and I'll bet the repo Chevelle hubs are the same. Best to call the supplier for measurements. Here's an example of the Chevelle hub for $69: http://www.ss396.com/mm5/merchant.m...evellecamino&Category_Code=STEERINGWHEELPARTS
Ttt. Bought the 69-72 repro 3 spoke sport steering wheel kit from TA Performance to put in my 66 Skylark w/tilt and automatic shifter column. Horn contacts are different with new wheel from the old factory 66 wheel. What do I need to do to make the horn work? Thanks.
