I have a 84 and 85 regal stripped down and ready to be made into track monsters. I have the original v6's Considering money modifications necessary etc. which is the best to do twin turbo the v6 or throw a high power BBB in it?
There is no replacement for displacement. What is your budget, and your goal for the car? Consider your starting points on each of these options. What would they run stock? Then with some modifications. V-6 sure is fun to see running an 8 second quarter, but they are very tempermental. turbo'd 350 would be cool, but get ready for fabrication and experimenting to get a combo together. BBB, pick one of the hundreds of combo's that work and build one.
Well, I guess with the whole budget thing I should mention that its not me who will be doing it. Its the family car and my dad just sold another so he'd be working on it. He is just looking for the most cost efficient way to make it go fast. He's always loved regals so that's what he wants to do.
Neither! Running 350s can be had for $100-$200 and they are usually in fantastic shape internally if the previous owner did any maintenance. Drop it in and boost it. If I had to guess you might even be able to use the V6 frame pads. Why would you want to start with a V6?uzzled: For a BBB be prepared to spend some serious cash to get it in usable shape. :bla:
Cheap? I echo Cason above: Go with a good-running, stock 350, run a quick rebuild kit through it (rings, gaskets, bearings, seals, valve job), and go for one of Mark's single turbo kits that are just over $1K. I can't think of a cheaper way to make your Regal run fast. The 350 will bolt up to the V6 mounts. You might be able to save some coin if you did your own turbo, but at Mark's prices, it's hard to say! Throw in a TH350 with perhaps a shift kit, weld the spiders in your stock rear end, and hit the street/track! Cheap! :TU: Cheap! :TU: Cheap! :TU:
Cheap and fast dont go together! Not in my definition of fast anyway! :3gears: Anything can be made to run good, just depends how much and how good. I would stay away from the turbo injected stuff if you dont know what your doing, the little V6 can run, but if you tune wrong you will hurt it. Stick with a V8 of somekind and do some research first. Most if all, have fun! :beers2:

It is not as easy as just bolting on turbos onto the exhaust. You are trying to convince people that it is just as simple as that. It is not. And why would a BBB self destruct at any time anyway? Why is the SBB immune to such a thing. The fact of the matter is catastrophic failure can happen at ANY TIME TO ANY ENGINE. And I seem to remember reading the thread was about twin turboing a V6 or building a BBB, nothing about a SBB. Why do yall get so mad when somebody suggest putting in a BBB in place of the SBB, then you do the exact same thing when somebody is contemplating a BBB...CASE CLOSED.
Haha, I think I was just getting carried away on the cheap theme, there. Indeed, a posi unit would be the right thing to do, particularly with an 8.5". I don't think the BBB is a bad idea, I just think that cheap, streetable power is much easier with the recent option of boosted 350s. About the only hurdle there is to contend with is carburetion, and, if I remember correctly, Mark makes phenolic floats for the Carter AFB/Edelbrock series of carbs. Those carbs are cheap and easy to work with, and sometimes plentiful on junkyard Chrysler big blocks -- although those are now getting rarer in junkyards. 1hp per cubic inch is easier than walking and chewing gum at the same time, but on an N/A BBB, that means messing with cams and compression, two factors that contribute greatly to streetability. Of course, I would advocate a boosted 455 which would solve those problems, but then he's gotta locate and drill the frame pads on the frame, which is not necessarily expensive, but it's eliminated with the 350. Additionally, 455 cores are traditionally more expensive than 350 cores. In my mind, the boosted 350 makes most sense if you want to keep it... Cheap! :TU: Cheap! :TU: Cheap! :TU:
Perhaps I should've read the original message more thoroughly: Whoops. ou: While I emphasized streetability in my previous post, I'm still convinced the boosted 350 would be the most cost effective route, even at the track. That said, if you're going to be throwing out inner fenders, back seats and carpet, and throwing in a cage, it's probably no problem to locate and drill for frame pads. :laugh: Just my $0.02.
Take a look through my post (the link below) You might get an idea on what is involved with the bbb in a regal. I also have a quick shot of my buddy's regal with a sbb. You could also procharge any of those if the turbo idea doesn't work for you. The guys at www . finishline motorsports . com (all one word) have a procharged sbb. Good luck!

There are 3 guys right here in Brooklyn NY with Buick 455's just sitting and dirty. Also Jason at BOP Connection has plenty (I got my D&S Performance built 455 from him a while back). Heck, i'm from North Carolina ... some are even down there.
Let us know how much you have in that turbo charged sbb, add it all up from the carb, waste gate to the drain plug and tell us how cheap it really is. Many of us have built some reliable bbb stuff that has been running all over the street and the track for years, it can be done. I am also building a sbc with a single turbo. I can blow that thing up faster than the bbb if I want, six of one, half another. And the turbo sbc's arent cheap, even with chinese junk all over it. It's about what you want to spend and how.
