Hey folks, we're looking for a rear sump oil pan for a 401 or 425 engine so that we can have a pick up tube made. The pan can be rusted, it just needs to be intact and not smashed. If you are able to help us out, please give us a call and ask for me or reply to this thread or get in contact with Michael, he'll be checking in to see if anyone replies. Thanks
Mike Here's the auction number for one on eBay. 330398987296 I'd like to see both the rear and center sump pans in a finned cast aluminum. Ed:grin:
Carmen Faso make pickups for the rear sump pan, and Russ Martin sells them: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Buic...ptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories Russ also has 2 rear sump pans for sale: http://shop.ebay.com/buickrodder/m.html?_dmd=1&_ipg=50&_sop=12&_rdc=1 One on left is the early 57- up pan. One on right is the 65-66 GS pan. Ed, the one you mentioned has a drain in the rear....I wonder what that's from??
Has anyone considered casting an alloy sump for the later nailheads?. I certainly would be keen on a rear sump pan for my 425. I spoke with a guy who does casting here in NZ and he estimated $2K NZ (approx US $1400) for the pattern to be made and set up costs and then about $150 NZ (approx US $105) each per casting. How much demand is there for a product like this? or are we better off sticking to the pressed steel variety? Ross
I'd pay $105 for a good rear-sump aluminum pan in a heartbeat. I'll bet the shipping from NZ to the Northeast USA would be more then $2!
John you are correct, definitely more than $2, but Im sure we can work something out if there is enough interest, even if I sent multiple sumps to someone for redistribution in the USA. (thinking out loud) NZ $150, approx US $105 was a guesstimate from the casting guy for the raw casting so there will be some machine / finishing costs as well. I see there is a similar "Ford" finned sump for AU$310 (US $270) on ebay.au picture below. I am keen to persue this (rear sump initially) if I am not stepping on someone elses toes, or if someone else is not already doing something about it, or can provide them in the USA for a similar or cheaper price to save on the shipping. Other Buick guys are casting valley pans and valve covers etc so maybe this is another item for them to add to their "to do" lists? Maybe I need to start a new thread, although looking at some other posts regarding new parts for nailheads there seems to be some keen interest for an alloy oil pan. Maybe if people are keen they can PM or email me and if there is enough interest I will look at taking it to the next step. rossandhelen@xtra.co.nz Ross
BACK TO THE ORIGINAL POST:.. Mike, are you looking to BUY or RENT a rear sump oil Nailhead pan?? I have one I would be willing to send you to USE with the total understanding I get it back! Wheelz, Tampa Bay
Whens the net trip Mike? Its nice to see ya drop by As for the other offers, being Mike comes to town that always makes it a little easier dont have to worry about shipping (depending on when he'll be through) but I dont think this is an urgent need. Thank you all for the offers, when I hear back from Mike and talk to dad I'll post an update.
Alright cool, thanks bud. Have a safe drive down. We want to make more pans besides the 455 repo one, we're just having enough troubles getting those made at the moment.
Mike, If you are considering repo'ing the rear sump pan, I've 'heard' the 65-66 GS pan is slightly different than the early one to clear the crossmember. I have both here, but have yet to compare them that closely.
OK Tell me I am crazy (which I already know) I have both of these pans and they are dimensionally identical. It has always been my impression and understanding that the only difference was the obvious relocation of the drain plug. I assumed it was done due to the close proximity of the crossmember and the oil would spill onto it had it been left as it was.
