I'm in the process of doing a engine build, Ive already had all of my machine work completed. What I have is a 455 with 70 iron heads that are 70cc, to go in a 72 Skylark. The heads have been maged, valve guides machined for double springs, machined for Stage one valves, port and pollished, roller rockers and full length header's. Weisco forged flat tops, The Gibson 110"cam 296-08H10. I wanted the 107' but, They didn't have it in stock. Turbo 400, 3000 stall 12 bolt rear. (Gears undecided) All I lack is purchasing the timing chain, push rod's, and gasket's and I will be be planning the assembly after the New Year Hollidays. My question is... How many of you guy's run on the track with iron heads? And with what ET's? I'm wondering cause my goal here is to be in the mid to low 11's Could it happen? And with what recipe??? Thanks, John. :Brow:

Yeah, I got the heads where they need to be. What I'm after is, Am I on the right track? This is doable with a hydrolic cam Right? What are some good choces for a high comp motor? See, this build started as a street motor and some track. But now Im not worried about street.
with the right compression, cam, intake, carb, headers, stall, gears and driver your car will run anywhere between low 12's and mid 10's...stg1 and flat tops, dont expect easy 11's you''ll run 12's hope for 11's, work on it some more, run 11's hope for 10's its just how it goes well ported iron heads and 11-1 compression should run 11's all day ken
My car runs 11.80's on slicks. And I found out the hard way that my fuel system was, shall we say, not giving me all the fuel I needed. I melted a piston. And my car is about 300 lbs. heavier than a coupe. I have 430 heads that have been fully ported along with stage 1 valves. My compression is just a tick over 10 to 1. Cam is Poston's 113A, which is milder than T/A's 413. SP1 intake, Holley 950HP carb, headers and 2.5" exhaust with x-pipe. Stock ignition. Stock style TRW aluminum pistons.
70 gsconvert, Thats more like it! Thats what I'm after.:beers2: That a respectfull time too for a heavy car. 10.1 comp are you running pump gas or 110? or mix? My machinest told me with the flat top's and heads that I have I will be 11.1 comp, I think it will be doable with the right timeing on the cam. There is a guy at a close by track forum that has a 950 holly set up for e-85 but, have not been able to contact him!? I Came to you guy cause, this is my first Buick build!!! I am a drag racer with a Chevy motor, The 70-72 skylark has been my fave since I was 16 with my first one. (poor car) So, Five lark's later, I want a 455 my way! so, help a Bother out LOL.
I run pump gas from Sunoco, Ultra 94 or 93. With flat top pistons notched for valves, you'll definitely be around 11 to 1 at a minimum. Without aluminum heads, you'll probably need to mix gas to get the octane up. I polished the heck out of my combustion chambers and even removed the casting button to help eliminate any possible detonation from hot spots. Tops of the pistons are also cleaned up and polished. My heads have 69 cc chambers and my pistons are about .005 in the hole. Trans is a 200-4R with a 2600-2800 stall converter. Rearend is a 8.5 with 3.73 gears. I've talked with a couple of engine builders and racers. Most feel that if I didn't have my fuel problem, I would have possibly been in the 11.7's or at least had my mph up from 112 mph to about 113-114 mph. So, theoretically, my engine in a comperable full weight coupe weighing 3600 lbs. should go about 11.4's or so at 117 mph. There are lots of little tricks that can be found here on the board when it comes to building these engines. I've used and tried most of them. Separately they're not much. But when you add them all up, you'll be happy with the results. Good luck with your build.
3500 #'s, 9" slicks, 455 w/ Ross pistons, Poston GS112 cam (107 cam with the lobe centers spread), 11" Coan 2800 stall, Qjet, Stg1 fuel pump, Performer intake, 1-7/8 TA headers, cast iron heads, stg1 valves, mild bowl blending and port clean up, 4.10 gears. Lots of suspension tweaking with spring, shocks, ride height. 60' 1.56, 1/4 11.66@112
11.0's with old school stg 2 pistons, kb window rattler and iron heads. This in a 3850 lb chebby truck.
Your goal should be easily attainable. Iron heads (ported) and 10 to1 compression with a mild hydraulic cam (235/245) in a 3800 lb GS can very easily run 11.40's @ 114 or better with sticky tires, mine did back in the early 90's and it was nothing special. With a lot of compression and a bigger cam (253/270) with the same heads done by Greg Gessler the car went 10.70's @ 124+. The next year Rob Chilenski's car went 10.40's, again, heavy car with iron heads. Its all in the combination but you are on the right track.
buicksstage1, Holly cow! That is a darn good ET. Are you running a full stock car or is it pretty light? Is that with a hydrolic flat tapet or a solid cam?
Really! I want to hear some more about these combos also. I'd love to get my car going as quick as possible and still be streetable (ie power brakes still work).
Only a handfull of people are actualy running iron Heads on the 1/4 !? Or no one willing to share secrets? LOL. I actualy think I am gona try to change my hydrolic 296-08H10 cam to 308 solid.
10.88 @119 0n 94 pump-gas and weighin in @ 3580 with me on board. Open headers 30x9 slicks no power brakes to big of a solid cam for them. 4500 -5000 8" converter 411 gear.10 to 1 comp sp1 1000 hp Holley 2" headers. That converter was slipping alot on the big end as I went through the traps @6600 rpm. Jamie
Hey Rufstok, my car is street/strip ready, I drive it everywhere during the summer when I get a chance, not mpg freindly but fun. If you go to the v8garage to pg.5 to click j.staged the bio of the car is there with pictures. I do use 2 holley black 140 pumps with 2 seperate switches to use 1 at a time on the street, and both ON for track use. 93 pump gas mix 110 at the track. The cam is a old GSCA club grind HYD. cam. 240-250 at .050 with buick 430 rockers. and also with a non-ported eddy performer intake, and cast iron stage-1 heads with port work, the car would have been a little faster with my T/A SP-1 but didnt use it this time. 11's with ported iron heads is very possible, engine combo, gears & conv. its all gotta work together!!! good luck, jerrold
Keith, what kind of compression were you running when you were going 10.70's and how much did your car weigh? Cody
Cody, Alot of compression, 13:1...the car weighed 3840#. Of course we had to run with a 10" converter and full tail pipes out the back in the GSE class. Keith
