I have a similar issue with my 72 electra. I have no idea how to get back there and I can hardly see any of the gauges at night.:blast:

    Kaivan,

For a model year 1972 Electra it's pretty easy to change the bulbs.
(I hope you know about the light switch function to make the dash lights brighter?)

Remove two screws at the top of the plastic speedometer cover.

    Remove the cover.
(tilt steering wheel comes in handy, gear lever in D1 position)

Now remove the three screws from the speedometer face plate and pull it out.
Be careful with the gear indicator wire, you can unhook it, you wil figure it out when you're doing this.

There are also bulbs behind the gauges, and when you are at it, also replace the bulbs for the indicators, high beam and warning lights :Smarty: !

Well, you will be surprised about the number of car owners that don't know about this, so I was just asking...:)

Be careful when you put the speedometer face plate back, it should line up with the speedometer cable.

Best thing to do is a little test drive with the cover still off to check if the needle is moving smoothly again (and not shaking/ticking !!)

George, Hopefully this will help you

I looked under the dash in my 66. It is very tight underneath. Seems the plastic vent is in the way.

I have a spare metal dash with the wiring harness attached.

If you can un bolt the harness bracket attached to the back of the speedo housing. You might be able to pull the harness down enough to get to the bulb. Lots like 2 bulbs in that area. Use a 1/4 socket with 1/4 drive for the harness bracket bolt. Don't pull the harness too hard or you will pull out the gray wire.

    Here are some pictures.

    Good Luck,
    Bob

George, Here is a picture of the harness pulled down.

The second picture is just to show you the other harness bracket. Maybe if you un bolt both it will be easier.

    Good Luck,
    Bob

    Bob,

When you post your photos, you do it like this:

    Code:
    [IMG][b][color=red]Image:[/b][/color] http://i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq119/bobspics1/dash1.jpg [/IMG]
And because of this, your photos are showing with the IMG code before and after them.

For some reason you have "Image:" added to your Photobucket URL...:Do No:
I don't really understand why, because when you copy & paste the link under your photos, there is no way that this "Image:" is added during that process....

Maybe it's because you are using the board's function to upload Photobucket images ?

I did not take a second look under the dash to see if it was possible.

Let's us know how you make out.

If you have to take the pad off. You should be able to pull the dash out enough.

The dash pad has 2 big studs on each end that you have to push through the clip and 5 bolts/screws along the top inside. I believe you remove the glove box cardboard to get one screw. Once all that is done. You push the pad towards the back of the car and it is off. Just remove the bolts for the dash and you should be able to slide it out far enough.

Make sure what ever way you decide disconnect the battery :TU:

    Have a great weekend and stay dry :beers2: :beers2: :beers2: :beers2:
