I will also add that the impression I got while speaking with their rep was that "If its not doing what you wanted, then lets get it fixed so it does" which is a positive ray of sunshine although tainted the color of tranny fluid The 2% overdriven thing still rubs me the wrong way though - maybe I'm ignorant but I believe in the law of conservation of energy
He swears the driveshaft will turn 2% slower than the crank with their converter. We'll see. I just want the damn thing to not rev to the sky to get my sled rollin'.
Also take a look at Continental Converters. They have a 10" 3200 stall Jim Hand model. Its for high torque big block Pontiacs and Buicks. It is said to feel like stock but will flash 3200 when flashed hard. I just picked one up to run behind my 408 sbc. My 408 was build for TQ and also run a GV overdrive so I needed a really efficent converter at part throttle. It should flash about 3000 behind my motor. I picked my up from Cliff Ruggles(Q jet god). Give him a call he is very knowledgable.
Don't you mean 2% faster, the odd "overdrive" comment? Driveshaft 2% slower than engine simply means some slippage in the converter due to the fact that it's a fluid coupling. Maybe you misunderstood their statement? Devon
As funny as that is, I know his pain. But with a Buick under the hood its real easy to forget the 10ft of car still behind ya. Till you turn
Im still licking my wounds from this past winter. We've all been there. As Doug says- Its only money, I can make more Plus, I have to break his b***s a little. Its a NE chapter tradition.
Both myself and Gusszgs (Jim N) use a Coan 10" Max Performance converter in similar builds, around 4k stall. I worked through AM&P, so Mike P was able to check my build and provide a dyno sheet to Coan from a similar build to get a converter made for my needs. I don't know if Jim N worked through AM&P or not, but it seems like it may be crucial to have a Buick guy (like Mike P or JW) talk to a converter shop on your behalf. Both Jim N and I have had similar results -- you'd never know you have a 4k converter until you mash the throttle. Mine was part # 20320-B from AM&P for $665 delivered. I couldn't be happier. $915 for a converter for a street/strip car seems like a little overkill.
Wow, that sucks on the face of it. Hopefully they will take care of you. It does sure seem amatuerish to throw out all the details you were offering to armchair-application something like a converter.....We've proven that doesn't work starting with the GSCA coverters 20-years ago.
He didn't necessarily arm-chair the build ... he referenced another Buick Riv making more power and running 11's (a board member) thats also a street car and said Yard's build is similar with his lower HP taken into consideration o No: ... then again the unit did ship only several hours after the order was placed which hints toward an off the shelf piece We are trying to contact this board member to follow up with them about their setup and how it behaves but they haven't been active on the board since 11/07 ... we'll see if they answer PMs or Emails
I agree. But I deferred to their expertise, as I'm not a converter expert and they are. I put all my faith in their knowledge and just let them call the shots. I wanted a real expert to tell me what to do. $915 for a part that could do what I need for $650 is over the top, but I'm not saying anything against Coan here. If the converter they get me finally ends up doing exactly what they say and perform like it should, then I'm 100% OK with the price. My other 10" converter is a real POS and doesn't flash worth a darn. This Coan flashed great, but cruising was abominable.
**UPDATE** I shipped the converter back to Coan on Monday. They will see what is up with it and lower the stall to 3200. More when I know it...
