Ryans-GSX Have fun, life is short.

I am surprised he has not sold it yet. I guess it's growing on him. Looks good Jason. I agree with Adam as I have had strange problems in the past with points/condenser.

It's clean! I'm not sure what to do with it. It's virtually untouched from 1974. I'd feel bad detailing it

Thanks brother! Yeah, it's a fun car to hop in and take for a cruise. Reminds me of the Corvette from the movie "King of the mountain"

So just a little more info into this odd drivability issue-

Doesn't seem to matter if I fill the tank or just put $20 in it. Same result. Dies at lights, won't idle. Tried it with the gas cap loose- no change

Started the car up yesterday morning, issue still present the following day, even cold. J would think sitting overnight would settle any debris clogging the sock.

So I pull out of my driveway, get to the stop light. Still running like a bag of excrement. Light turns green, start going down a 30 mph road and the car literally falls on it's face like you turned the fuel off. It actually recovered itself before stalling. It came back to life and from then on, it ran fine. I can't explain it. Like it pushed whatever was getting restricted through.

It's gotta be a tank issue. Maybe a vapor separator, restricted hose. I'll get up under there today and see if there's anything obvious

I had one at one time that did the same.
Turns out the fuel hose coming off the sender had a very tight kink in it that closed off the fuel where it met the frame.

Well, I think I figured out my issue...

I'm almost positive it was an excessive amount of fuel in the tank. I ran the crap out of the car past couple days. I only filled it with 4 or 5 gallons and ran it till it was on fumes. Lather rinse repeat. I think doing that kept the water suspended in solution and I was able to run it through the engine

Filling it up full just allowed the water to settle to the bottom (I think). This is my working theory anyway. Last $20 fill up, the car ran flawlessly. Nest time it rains I'm putting a rubber floor mat over the filler. Sometimes the simplest answers are the answers. So I'm going to call this fixed for now

Now onto the binding in the drive line on take off. I'm thinking one of the u joints on the driveshaft is tight. Driveshaft looks miserable to remove...

Just looked at the prop shaft and half shafts. No grease fittings anywhere. Still leaning towards a tight u joint.

Feels almost like when the isolator goes bad on a two piece Riviera driveshaft. You get that clunk around turns. This is similar but very very slight. Almost feels like your running over a seam in the road.

What does the car have for rear gears?

Bring an AC car with a wide box, it's got 3.08's. the optional rear was 3.36

You sure it's not the clutches in the posi sticking? May just need a rear differential fluid change...

Buick didn't seem to understand that concept, esp. w/the '71-2 350 4-sp cars.

Spoke to a couple C3 guys at one of the car nights. They said to check the rear wheel bearings for excessive play. Rear wheel bearings don't look like fun at all. If that's the case, I'll have to bite the bullet and just get rebuilt trailing arm assemblies. Then of course I'll need to get the half shafts done......I sense a rabbit hole

I didn't think I'd like it as much as I do. It's a fun beater. Some guy at the grocery store approached me about it and asked if it was for sale. I told him 18,500. He took my number so we'll see

There's a lot going on with rear trailing arms besides the bearings and setting them up with the right shims, - the trailing arm bushings, the emergency brake shoes and springs...all of which require special "Corvette" tools:rolleyes:

Van Steel in Clearwater rebuilds them for 450 each. I think they get $150 each for half shafts. By the time the smoke clears, I think the rear suspension project would probably be $1600ish

That's out of the ballpark for CJ.

Went out after posting and gave the rear suspension a good inspection.

Tires off the ground, suspension at ride height and a pry bar under the tire, I have an 1/8" of movement up and down on the right side. If it were a front suspension, you'd think it was a wasted lower ball joint. But the play seems to be the diff yoke moving in and out of the housing. Left side is tight. The only thing I feel on the left side is the runout in the wheel bearings. No in or out movement on the left side diff yoke.

So I'm thinking the yoke or the snap ring that holds them in is worn causing this excessive movement. Is it the binding sensation I'm feeling? Not sure but this definitely needs to be addressed. I'm probably going to sideline it till it gets fixed

Unfortunately, the whole diff needs to come down to take the rear cover off. One small blessing is it has side exhaust, so at least I won't be fighting with mufflers. Just everything else

Yoke kits are about $160 each. Not terrible. Probably tackle it after the nationals so stay tuned for this fiasco.

Just measured it- .103" in and out movement. Looks like the end of the yoke wore against the cross shaft in the diff. From what I can tell, the spec is .010- .020

    Another common Corvette issue:rolleyes:
