Ok, there used to be a sticky about this in the big car forum, but damn hackers screwed that up... So here goes: I have a 70 LeSabre which (from previously reading the big car forum sticky, and looking at the axel) I found out has a 10 bolt rear, supposedly the same one as they put on the a-body cars. Now, seeing as I want a posi or limited slip rear end (as opposed to the open, spin one tire all day rear end that I now have), what is the internal size of the gears? Or I guess I should ask if this is a 8.2 or an 8.5 rear end. I also believe it's a 28 spline, but seeing as I haven't opened anything up, I don't know. Also, does anyone actually make posi units for this rear? I was looking in the summit catalogue, and they had posi units for 71 and up, and for 64-72 chevy rears, but nothing for a 70 rear end. So wtf, eh? Any help would be awesome... :beer
First thing that you will have to determine is if the passenger side bearing cap (thus bearing also) are larger than the driver side. If so you will have a problem getting parts. If they are the same such as with the `64-`69 types there are a limited number of combinations. There are 3.55, 3.90 & 4.10 gears available as well as posi carriers. TA offers these and they run about $900 for gears, carrier and installation kit. Dave
