http://forums.performanceyears.com/forums/showthread.php?t=498369 Yeah..I think I'll wait and see how my girdle holds up before I drop mucho grande on an aftermarket block...R&D doesnt hold a candle to field testing...Fish
well, at least Bobb's block seems to be holding up well. Too bad it's 1 of about 3 in the hands of its rightful owner.
That is what I was thinking, I have seen sbf 302 break right in half and there made alot better than that block was!!!P.O.S.!!!
I think a big problem for Pontiacs is close bore centers. This may have been a max bore effort that failed...
Not a failed max bore effort. We in the Pontiac hobby are lucky enough to have 2 different choices when it comes to buying an aftermarket block. AllPontiac makes the IA2 block and Kauffman Racing Equipment (K&M Machine) makes the MR-1 block. The broken block in the pictures is a MR-1 block. All of the facts aren't in yet, but it appears that there was a bad batch of MR-1 blocks cast. A Brinell test was performed on quite a few blocks and the result were that the blocks are too soft for heavy (if any) use. The Brinell test results came back in a range of 130-160. A board member came up with the term "Butter Block" and it kind of stuck. If you have a extra few hours check out the other post regarding the MR-1 block. If you can look past some of the there's actually some pretty good information posted. MR-1 Discussion On the other hand the AllPontiac IA2 blocks Brinell an average of 235 and have no issues to speak of. Plus, their customer service is A+++. BTW - I own a IA2 block. AllPontiac --> AllPontiac.com -- IA2 block Kauffman Racing Equipment --> KREPOWER or K&M Machine -- MR-1 block I haven't read much regarding your new aftermarket blocks. Has a Brinell hardness test been done on any of the blocks? Results?
holy $hit!!!! talk about grenading an engine . . . looks like you really stuck a grenade inside that thing!!!
2 piece block OUCH, bet that made some weird sounds coming apart. I had a 750 Norton Comando back in the 70's that had a rod sieze on the crank and it sawed the cylinder and case in half before I got the clutch pulled in. Mikey
