:Do No: Has anyone tried a X pipe on a car that runs open headers? Wouldn't it help there to as much as with mufflers on it? Just a thought.:Comp:

I really think there is something there. Look under any NASCAR WC or BGN and you will probably see an X-pipe and, guess what?, no mufflers. They use a "boom tube" because of the low ground clearance. These things are more high tech than they look. They are tuned precisely for the RPM range of the engine on a specific track. Go to www.drgas.com and take a look.

Also, a guy at our local track has open X-pipe set-up on his Super Pro small block Chevy. It's a 377 ci making about 600 HP and it sounds like a freakin' rotary! It has a high pitch scream that sounds like one of the import cars. Everybody asks if he's turning 9000 RPM and he says he's only turning 6500-7000. Anyways, hope this helps your decision.

    Have fun.

:Do No: Sounds like something i might try on mine one time. That should make a 455 sound really different:laugh: Should I go with a 3" or 31/2" like the headers?

I ran my 62 special in B.G. last year (2001) with an x-pipe and open headers. I also have done some dyno testing with the x- pipe with and without mufflers, yes, it does help even without mufflers. Mostly what I found is that it widens the power band , this is a good thing, and the x-pipe has a really awesome sound to it. Jim Burek P.A.E. ENTERPRISES

I have a DR. Gas x-pipe system on my 70 convertible. It has large case muffler from Straightline performance in Michigan. The thing sounds ausome and is about as quiet as you can get with a performance muffler and headers. I love it and would recommend it to anyone. It really opens up when you floor it, but is still not as loud as open headers.

:beer Anyone have any runs without and with X- pipe that knows how much they picked up? I was wondering if I could get a tenth out of it on mine.

Tom, Iwould be surprised if you did not pick up at least a tenth of a second with an x-pipe. Jim Burek

 To Jim B, when you were on the dyno playing with x-pipes did you have to rejet or play with timing with the x-pipe or was it just a bolt on and run kinda thing? I really want to try one on mine but I have alot more time than money right now so I will probably end up building most of it myself. My other question is should I make the x-pipe 3" or go to 3-1/2" right away? Do they even make a 3-1/2" one?:Comp:

When I did testing with the x-pipe, i did not change any jetting or timing. You can get an x-pipe in pretty much any size you want, mine is 3.5 inches, I've used 3 inch and 2.5 inches .

I doubt you need a 3.5 inch. Jim

:Do No: Just one more X-pipe question, How much pipe do I need to run after the X? I also run mufflers on the street and I am wondering where would be the best place to open it up. Someday when I can afford a set of really good muffs I would like to see if I can get it as fast with muffs as open. The class I run in most others run open and it messes me up when I try to race with muffs and can here the car next to me.:Comp:

From what I read and what I was told, you want the mufflers as far back as possible, just before the pipes go over the rear axle.

You want to mount the x- close to the collectors, usually it will sit just behind the tranny, Then I would run pipes and mufflers at least to the rear axle, if no mufflers, then pipes at least to the rear axle. Jim Burek

    X Pipe Part #

Does anyone have a part # for an x pipe from summit or one of the online vendors out there? I'm having a hard time finding it.
    Thanks, John :)

    Here ya go Chris.

You need the DR GAS kit, with 2 extra piece of pipe, both 12" long, flanged on one end, to fit over the ID of one of the short elbows.

I see for some reason, I lost the yellow arrow....

The extra pipes are noted by the two headed arrow, which is postioned in the X junction.

    How about with manifolds?

Should the x-pipe position be about the same if I am running cast iron manifolds? I have 2.5" head pipes from TA, a 2.5" mandrel bent system, and one of the Dr. Gas kits.

I'm about to have this installed on my '70 GS 455 and was just wondering about the correct placement.

    Thanks,
