Wye Defroster Duct to Heat core box connection

So, let me first say, Install the Wye defroster duct first. If you install heater box first, defroster duct doesn’t fit. Ugh

Now that I have the duct and box installed, I notice I have a gap between the two. Looks like I’m about 1/4” off sideways and height.

The defroster duct is mounted in the four tabs where the opening is under the dash. The fact that the top of he duct isn’t really tight to the bottom of he dash, maybe the space is fine.

Let me know what you think.
    Thanks again!
    Nick

They always seem to have that gap. Not sure if it was there for a purpose. There may have originally been some sort of seal there, but I've never seen one. I stuck some thick butyl tape around it. Defroster works without it, but may blow a tad better with that gap sealed. I've noticed the heaters/defrosters in these old cars heat the car much quicker and more efficient than new vehicles. I have to turn it way down after just a few minutes of running it or it cooks me.

I would have been good to fixed the cracked heater box before you put it back on. A little fiberglass and resin is what i use (on both sides and you need to rough the surface to get a good adherence). Without the screw to hold down the defrost vent, it might rattle, and I don't think you can screw it back on with that big crack there. Of course, butyl tape will hold it all in place.:)

Thanks Roger. Never did fiberglass before and was worried about the rattle. Since it’s a PIA to install and I had it in and out 3 times already, I might just put some butyl tape between the tab and biz to kind of secure it and stop it from rattling. I have some of that 3M strip caulk as well. That might fit the crack better. I also have some foam gasket material to use as well. Thanks for the info and ideas. Nick.

One more quick question, does the cable harness to the console shifter route behind the heater box or in front.

If you mean the cable that goes to the heat/air controls? I really can't remember, but here is what is shows in the service manual. Looks like it goes behind the defrost vent, and above the box. Sorry I can't be of more help.

No worries. I got that same picture. What I can’t find is the portion of the cable that comes off and goes to the center console trans shifter. All my paper work doesn’t show how it’s routed. All I know it goes under the carpet and pops up between the center bucket seats.

You have been a great help and given me some good ideas to fix the crack and stop a rattle. I just need to get some time and do it. Was helping a friend replace about 12 fence posts today.

Maybe mine is different, but the auto trans shifter cable (bucket seats, center console shift) goes through a hole just in front of the shifter then goes to the tran. That hole (1 1/2 inches dia or so) is just a few inches in front of the shifter.

Here is a picture of what I'm taking about (red arrow).

Not the actual shift cable to the trans but the electrical connection that runs from the shifter to the dash harness. I have some pictures of when I removed stuff about 4 years ago. The electrical cable was just laying under the carpet. I couldn’t remember if it actually ran behind the heater box and the new cable harness has little plastic areas to screw into something but don’t know for what. Maybe it’s to the underneath of the center console.

Ok, I see. Mine had all been cut out (along with the wires for the lighted mirror and some other stuff). Maybe someone else can chime in.
