67 Skylark. Brand new engine harness and dash fuseblock and harness. In the engine harness is a brown wire. It seems to go from pin #9 that plugs into the fuse block, and the other end terminates at the coil Negative terminal. Now comes the confusion. Both my brand new and my original dash fuse block wire harnesses do NOT have a pin at the corresponding pin on the fuse block for terminal 9. So, what is going on here? At the bottom of the diagram is the coil, follow the brown wire, it goes to terminal 9 . But there is no connector inside the fuse box at terminal 9 location. HELP!
Upon further investigation. It appears the coil negative is ONLY grounded thru the points in the distributor. So having that wire open shouldn't matter. Interesting that they even bother putting that wire in there if it simply isn't needed. Makes no sense. That being said, since a tachometer connects to the coil negative, any reason I can't just use that wire and hook onto it via the fuse block? Like slide a new contact in there and connect a short wire up to the tach itself? Am I on the right path?
I believe that brown wire is a tachometer wire. The negative side of the coil goes to the distributor. The points provide a ground for the coil when they close.
Yeah, that is what it seems. Now I need to figure out how to add a terminal to the fuse block so that position 9 can cross the firewall and come inside.
So you are missing the wire on the dash side? Edit, you are missing the wire on both the engine and dash harness. The engine harness wires simply clip in with these barb connectors, Not sure what they are on the dash side.
Nah, they are a little square plug. Just a different shape, same idea. Need to pull one out of my old harness and either unbend it or better yet, determine the style number and order new ones. Once I have one loose, it shouldn't be too hard to match up via photos. On the right hand side you can see only 2 receptacles. The third one on the bottom is what is the tach wire. So I need to match the metal terminal to the rest in this picture and I'm golden. Now that I think about it, I could add circuits thru the other remaining sockets. Electric gauges thru the harness. hmmmmm, Things to fool with.
I bet you can buy those at lectric ltd. Give them a call, or better yet, PM Todd, he's a dealer for them.
How long before you need this? I do wiring and have all the terminals, connectors, tools, to make up the wire you need, then you just poke it in the hole and enjoy life. I am in the process of moving, so all my goodies are in temp storage for the next few weeks. If you can wait, I can make up what you need and send it to you. Just tell me the AWG, color, length, terminal and connectors required and I'll get it to you as soon as I can. If it works, make a donation to the board to help keep the lights on.
Wow, that is an awesome offer. I"m home now of course. I have the automotive wire but am not certain on if I have brown. I think it was 18 ga, but again, car isn't near me. If you could tell me what the name or style number of that particular terminal is I may be able to just order 10 of them and be happy. The trick is knowing what the part number is.
They are "Packard/Delphi Twin Lock terminals" http://www.delmarwire.com/home/fuse-block-terminals Let me know if this helps.
Perfect. That helps a lot. I see some on ebay, looks about $19 for 10 of them which will do just fine. Even at 25 packs, they are a dollar each minimum so this isn't even price gouging. Thanks for the help guys.
