Shimming mains seems like it would work.
Greg even mentioned removing .0005 off main caps to tighten clearance up, seems that would work too....

Interesting. I've bookmarked that. I haven't bought bearings yet so I *AM* hopeful that something can be done.

You were @ .002 w/used bearings. You may be fine w/new ones.

I'm going to order standard bearings. I'll need a set if I can find the .001 set to mix/match for my desired .0015. I'm ordering them from an ebay seller that has free returns. I'll drop them in, check them and see where things sit. Either they work or the crank needs turning.

I will turn the main journals if that's what it takes but I'm hoping it doesn't. I mean .0005 is pretty slim. Heavy duty aluminum foil is .0008 - .001

Heads are almost done. $140! Can you believe it?

I'm getting the rotating assembly balanced next week, just waiting on the rod bearings and rings to arrive.

Was that just for 3 angle v.j. & guides installed?

This was a set of heads I was given that were lightly run. He cleaned them, checked the guides, touched up the seats and valves. Nothing fancy. Replaced the valve seals (I bought those) and reassembled them.

My main bearings arrived and they look pretty rough. I've never seen a new set look this rough. I'm not sure the ones I pulled out looked any worse than these. Some pretty rough spots and the discoloration is gritty feeling. I don't think I would run these if they were given to me for free!

Is this normal? Would you run them? I can return them and try another vendor.

A friend that raced roundy rounds used to polish bearings with 0000 steel wool.
See what JW would do. Lots of bearings on ebay are old stock.

I was taught to do that by the first guys that taught me about building engines. We may have used scotbrite but same idea.

But then you are increasing clearance. I would just wipe with alcohol to clean and plastigage to check clearances.

They look like they've been jostled around some....
I wouldn't be overly concerned with discolor or staining. They probably weren't made recently...

    Let's see how RA does...

I returned them. I showed my machinist and he didn't like them either.

On a positive note, I dropped off the rotating assembly today and the guy said he'd have it balanced this week and it would cost $150. That sounds pretty good to me.

New crank bearings are on the way from RockAuto.

Wait till he hits you with " It needed a couple mallory slugs" at $100 a pop!:eek::eek:
My forged TRW slugs, stock rod eng needed 1 slug, ext. balanced.
The stroked eng with autotecs, pankl rods & internal bal needed 2 slugs....

No Mallory in my billet crank. Just gave em the Bob weights and they made the crank to that spec.

Let's see that billet crank again. Is it still in your freezer? Did you have the center counterweight added for easier internal balancing?
