Life has thrown us a curveball, one we never imagined we'd have to swing at. Nine days ago my wife went to work like any other day. Fifteen minutes after she started she lost feeling in her left leg. She had a co-worker call me. I'm only about 5 minutes away so I went right away. By the time I got there she was literally paralyzed from the waist down with no obvious event to cause it. To say the least, we were terrified. I immediately took her to emergency room. I'll skip all the details but after a CT scan, 5 MRIs, a spinal tap and countless other tests, they have determined the cause to be a neurological disorder called Transverse Myelitis http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/transversemyelitis/detail_transversemyelitis.htm
They began treatment with steroids in an IV but she hadn't been responding like they hoped and they determined that her autoimmune system was fighting them off. At that point they also started Plasmapheresis, or Plasma exchange to replace the cells in her blood with neutral cells so she can start fighting this. It's much like kidney dialysis only with the blood. There will be 5 treatments, one every other day for 10 days. Each treatment takes about 2 hours. Still, she kept sliding downhill through the first part of the week.

Some of you know that she is not only my wife, but my best friend in the world. I've never been super religious but I went to see our Pastor on Wednesday and he started a prayer circle, begining with me, and is teaching me the power of prayer. Life has been pretty fair to us for the most part so I assume we have slacked off in the prayer department because of it, but this is a real eye opener and was getting to the point where the only hope was possibly some divine intervention, and remarkably, it worked. I am a believer now. The next day the meds and treatment started to work and she is feeling 100% better. It's going to be a long journey home. There is no cure for this but there is a 33% chance of a full recovery through physical therapy, which they are now starting with her, and then when they get her ambulatory they will move her to a rehab facility in Pensacola. They told us that recovery will be slow and couldn't really pin down a time frame. Two months, six months, they simply don't know at this point, and of course, there's also a 33% chance there will be no recovery at all and another 33% chance of anything in between. At this point we are focusing on the serenity prayer and will accept wherever it leads us.

Sorry for the long post but right now any and all prayers will be greatly appreciated. I have been here long enough to have witnessed an incredible amount of compassion toward other members here even though many of us have never even met in person. Right now all we ask for is prayers. Thanks.

    Bill, God is good.

I have a rare form of necrotizing vasculitis which swept me from head to toe, lost feeling in extremities and lost the end of one toe and finger. It began in my feet and progressed until I lost all feeling and movement in my legs from the knee down. I became paralyzed and lost movement in lower legs while I was in a hospital bed and they had not begun treating because they didn't know what it was. Mine came on over a period of weeks though accompanied by swelling and severe pain as the nerves died.

God is strongest when we are weakest and have nowhere else to go.

Bottom line, doctors said I would never walk again, nerves all dead. You should know that I still have limited feeling in my lower legs but God has given me movement so I can walk albeit with a funny gate. Feeling is slowly returning after regaining some movement, it has been 4 years now. My toes don't work too well but I can lift my feet to walk. For the first year and a half, I had to lift my feet high to keep from dragging my toes and I could not balance when I stopped. I looked like I was wearing swim fins when I walked.

    Keep the faith.
