My 1968 GS 400 came with an air cleaner I can't seem to ID. I'm about to start cleaning this one and I figured I'd ask in case I need to get a correct one. There was a similar snorkel on the Olds 442's but these had two not one like I have. Lid as well as the filter fits perfectly so I always believed this to be stock but now I don't think so. Only number's I can find are on the rubber heat riser elbow (1383166). Any experts know? I know Chevy used the chrome lid but the one's I've seen do not match mine. Car seems to have been made in October of 1968. THANK YOU!!!!
No, that is clearly not the right air cleaner. The snorkel inlet looks like it has provisions to hook a flexible tube to it. This is the correct air cleaner, https://www.musclecardrive.com/buick/images/1968_buick_400_engine.jpg Why is your air cleaner weird? Maybe it had a bad childhood?
Thats interesting. It doesn't have the square notch to clock it on the carb properly. Also kind of looks like it has the bumps to clear the float adjustments on a holley carb. The oval end is definitely for duct work to the core support or fender.
That hole is what located that on the top of a Q jet carb. The internal fuel bowl vent went up thru that hole.
Looks like a Pontiac air cleaner. My 74 Firebird has that hole for the bowl vent and the provisions for the flex tube to the fender.
I think Scott's figured it out. That looks very much like the air cleaner base on my first car, a 1976 Pontiac LeMans. The odd perforations on the snorkel were meant to receive a plastic piece that adapted the snorkel to a round piece of ductwork: Devon
Late ‘70s Trans Ams, if they had the W72 400, had the round locater hole and the flat wide snorkel. I had a ‘79 and it looked like that. The non-W72s had a round end snorkel. Patrick https://musclecaraircleaners.com/pr...72-shaker-air-cleaner-with-fresh-air-ductwork
For reference, here is a picture of my 74 firebird formula 400 air cleaner. My air cleaner has a clearance bump in the back for the HEI distributor and the thermal switch is clocked a little different.
Wow! Thank you all! This solves a major mystery for me! As soon as I can get a replacement, I would be glad to pass it along to another. I was thinking that it was earlier so I guess that's why I never found a good comparison. I have a 4 barrel air cleaner from a Buick 350 which is smaller so my chrome lid does not fit. This one: https://musclecaraircleaners.com/pr...n-sport-gs-regal-400-oval-snorkel-air-cleaner says it' correct for the 68's and is larger than my other one so that must be from my old 69 Skylark. My GS has sat for 35 years with a trunk filled with parts from my long gone Skylark. Never had a Trans-Am but my brother did so this one must have come from his old car; can't remember if it was a '79 or '80 but it had a four speed and a 400 which he sadly dogged until it burned up. (I remember it also had an 8-track which would have been exceptionally rare in 1980 I believe) Thank you all again!
Your air cleaner isn't weird, it's just identifying as a '68 GS 400 a/c. Perfectly normal these days...
