Many years ago Kenne Bell sold a 350 thrust bumper bolt doohickey. It was basically a correct sized bol with the head turned down to a shallow dome shape and then there was a thin jamb nut to set the depth. I had one in my old 350 that is no longer of this earth and another is still in a buddys 350. Only downside is the intake needs to be off to set it. But once its in just forgetaboutit.:3gears:
This is the cam JW is building into my 470 motor............... I am hoping the idle is similar to the old "window rattler" 107 cam I used to run............ I love hot cams:laugh:
I have the TA 413 in my 350. Just got it running a couple of weeks ago and took it to the track to make some passes and broke the torquer on the second pass. The cam "sounds good" for whatever that means (not important to me). Seems to want to rev quick and I did not want to go past 6000 much until I got things sorted out and it would hit that in a heart beat. I have ported heads and Chevy small stem valves and "good" springs. For right now I just want to get my wife some laps in the car and do a little racing. Looking back I should have bought the forged pistons from Mike at AMP instead of going with the cast pistons I'm using. The next time I'm in this thing I will upgrade the pistons and rods. I have the late rods now with ARP bolts. For an old bracket engine I think this cam will be ok but needs a much more modern grind for serious power. Jim N.
I have one on my shelf to put in my 69 GS 350 3-speed. It has a cam button in the box with all the other parts...I'm going to break in the engine with a 212 , then install this and see how much better the roller does.
The GS has a Comp 268 and 1.65 roller rockers, giving it lift and duration comparable to the TA212. Healthy lope at 700rpm idle, very strong pull all the way through 5200 rpms. Trans is an M22 with a 3.9 rear gear. Launches great at 2200. Installing new rear upper and lower control arm bushings and TA no-hop bars next week. Slicks on order, when they arrive it's time for the Milan Dragway.
hello all. this is an awesome forum. i just bought a 72 gs 350 and am interested in putting a cam in. i'm looking for descent power on a daily driver. seems to me that the majority think the ta 212 is best. i'll be doing the work myself and have no experience in head work so if i can stay away from that and keep the stock valve train i should be good. what do you all think?
quick rundown of the car--gs 350/th350, holley 750 carb, fresh .30 over rebuild, long tube headers hooked to glass packs. no pipes. the car sounds awesome, but i dont feel like it has the power it should. i just put the holley on bc the rochester that came on it had issues. (rear butterfly wouldn't open, sputterd) seems to run better with the new carb. i'm looking for a cam that sounds pretty lopey and will be good in a daily driver. i'm new to this and will be folloing the chiltons manual. i'm thinking of one of the ones that works well with stock valve train. seems ta 212 is the mojority vote.
You'll have to settle for no to mild lope if you want a good daily driver. Lope is the result of a faily aggressive cam and the more aggresive the cam the less street friendly it is. With a big cam you would be sacrificing a bunch of low end torque which is what you need on the street for some high rpm HP. With a low comp engine with stock heads you might not see any increase in HP with an agressive cam. The TA212 would probably work well for you.
scotty g built my 70 electras 455 and used the ta 290-94h . im not a cam expert but the motor puts out 415/538 and is about as much cam as youd want in a hopped up family boat......i do look forward to ta shortys if i ever get the money and think that it is one thing i can do without getting busted by the boss here. side note last night i saw someone on the highway doing about 65( our speed limit) he had recenty delighted in wiping my A off a light in town......he was in a charger and i polished his A on the highway leaving him crying over his payment book at about 85...very strong afterr 70,marty
For that application I would use a TA 284 cam and just lower the idle a bit to make it lope...:beers2:
X2 the 284 has that "lope" you are talking about... you can do a search on youtube and type in. Ta 284
comp cam custom grind...solid lifter dur 279 int - 290 ex.. lift 540 int - 552 ex. And man does it make some power !!
Advantages of the TA212: -A bit better in the lower RPMS -Works ok with stock torque converter -Works ok with highway gears in the rear end Advantages of the 284: - A bit more higher RPM power - Mean idle If you are wanting to add an aftrermarket torque converter and or re-gear the rear end then the 284 would be better. If the heads are ported the 284 would be better I think.
so i looked at youtube for some sound vids of the 284 and all i saw were those fromm buick 455 engines. should i expect the same sound from a 350? what all do you have to change to put this thing in? new springs/lifters? that kind of work easy to do? can the motor be left in the car for the cam swap? thanks for all of oyur input
Sean is right on the money with the 284 cam. Compared to the 212 it has a higher top end and has a meaner idle but you do need good gears and an aftermarket converter to get the most out of it off the line. I also had my heads ported to match my TA manifold since I had the motor apart for a complete rebuild. Check out TA's website for the exact specs!
