Where do you find build sheet codes on the web?

    Are they available on the web? I have been looking, but nothing so far. I have found various trim code items, and there are a few pages of GS codes (GS the CAR, not the option package neccessarily) that are nice for engine etc.

    I saw a few different pages on the web for mopar build sheet-type codes-you could find out basically anything about the Mopars, I think.

    Not Buick, though. I understand Buick and GM didn't keep very good records on Buick stuff, but I know people know the codes.

    Are there books readily availble at book stores, or amazon that have them?

    This information is not readily available anywhere.

    Duane Heckman is THE MAN when it comes to decoding these sheets (or most sheets, anyway, depending on the year/model). See his website www.classiccarinteriors.com for details and pricing information.

    What car did you find a build sheet in?

    found the build sheet in my Riv

    I just bought a 66 RivGS in Ohio, and the guy was like, "and probably the coolest thing about this car is I still have this, it's worth it's weight in gold" and he handed it to me.

    Now I was excited, but the protecto plate in the little book (from the factory-the one in the book when the car is bought) was more interesting I thought! Not sure if the one that gets sent to you after the car purchase is around, but maybe it's in the car somewhere still? We'll see.

    And as I was finding out yesterday, there may be more build sheets littered around various places on the car anyway! THis would be good, as the one I do know I have isn't entirely intact, it's missing most of the middle of the top line, which has the codes for paint and trim, I think.
    I can make out an "X" which should be right, the car is white (though repainted, pretty sure) and there was an x code for white paint for that year.

    I do need to figure out what engine it has, (I need to replace the water pump) which has been kind of confusing, since the stock motor is supposed to be the 425 nailhead, however I have seen a page on the web (link)
    that shows a casting item that my car doesn't have.
    THe confusing part is that any place on the web says the stock engine for 66 Riv's is the 425, with the only "engine" option whether to get a single or dual quad.

    Thanks for the suggestion

    Post the P-O-P codes. I believe the start of the second line would contain your factory motor code.

    You mean point of purchase?
    I don't have that portion of the sheet ("production order") intact.
    I am missing part of the top line, right in the middle.

    This section has seven segments-the first is skinny and maybe shouldn't have anything in it, then six roughly equal segments.
    I can make out two numbers in the first couple of segments, 94 and 87. Then the next segment seems to have two x's, then two segments without anything I can read, then the last segment has a G.
    For the engine code it shows an SC, and the trans is a BS, which I know is the switch pitch tranny-though I don't think there is any "switch" or actuator on the top of the engine as I saw in a picture on the web very recently. (I know the switch pitch doesn't refer to a manual switch, neccessarily, it's internal to the trans itself).

    So Marco, have at it, please? And thanks

    I mean the Protect-O-Plate in the warrenty booklet. Do you have it near you? How does the 2nd line start - it should be a 2 digit code, starting with an 'M'

    Taken from www.buicks.net Here -

    1966 V-6 225 MH
    V-8 300 ML
    V-8 340 low comp. MX
    V-8 340 2bbl MA
    V-8 340 4bbl MB
    V-8 400* GS 401 MR
    V-8 401* MT
    V-8 425* 4bbl MW
    V-8 425* 2X4bbl MZ

    don't have that p-o-p

    Unless my friend who I called to look at it is delusional. He said there isn't any two letter code beginning with M on it.

    Like i had said though, the plate is the one that comes in the book when you buy the car. The book says to send away for a companion p-o-p and stick it next to the one in the book.
    I will assume they are a bit different. Not sure if the other p-o-p
    is in the car somewhere, I will have to look.

    Thanks

    All model year 1966 Buick engines had a two letter code starting with M.

    First letters in V8 engine codes by the year:

    1963 = J

    1964 = K

    1965 = L

    1966 = M

    1967 = N (there was a 430 CI engine with MD code for this year)

    1968 = P

    1969 = R

    1970 = S

    1971 = T

    1972 = W

    1973 = X

    1974 = Z

    Can you get a digital picture of what you're talking about? The Protect-O-Plate (P-O-P) is a small piece of metal glued to the warranty booklet that has backwards numbers. Here's an example - Is this what you have? If not, look for the two digit code on the surface of the block, just below the head, between plugs #5 and #7 (drivers side rear).

    So, as I said my buddy's a numbskull!

    That's exactly it, (the one stuck to the book already) but I had my buddy look, cuz the p-o-p and the car are at his house.
    i kept telling him there should be a 2-letter code, and he was certain that there wasn't one. He saw a code "442" or something similar, and said "I bet that means a 400 4 barrel dual exhaust" but I don't know what he was thinking or seeing.

    In any case, I should have no problem figuring this out when I have a look at the plate, since you guys are so cool.
    And I can get a pic up later if you want to see it for whatever.
    Otherwise I will just check it against the info you have listed here.

    Thank you for your help!

    I think your mate was thinking of the Oldsmobile Cutlass 442 series when he read 442.
    400 CI, 4 barrel and dual exhaust was one of the descriptions for the 442 name badge over the years.

    for sure

    Yeah, I know, and he knew that also.

    Turns out he's smitten on I think a 70 Cutlass something. Might've colored his "theory". Seems to think his uncle's Cutlass was stock and kicked butt when we were all younger. Doubt it was stock from what he told me about how tough it was to keep rubber to pavement. ??

    'Course I don't doubt it was a baaad ride

    Regarding your water pump, it will be the same whether you have a 401 or 425.

    yes, except for A/C

    I just called NAPA on Thursday and found this out-the only difference for the water pump for 401 or 425 is whether you have A/C or not. I'll be ordering one next week.

    Thanks
