Does the well width vary from 68-72 cars? How about outer drum to drum axle width? I have a 68 Custom that already had some trimming from the lip, alot. Curious what tire size would require that much trimming. It only came with 235's, a little anemic under that back end.
The 68 and 69 are tighter than the 70-72. Normally the 68-69 fit a 255 or 275, while the 70-72 fit a 295 easily and 305 max. Each car is a bit different, bodies aren’t always centred on the frame.
Like Sean said, every car is different, it is very common to have more room on one side than the other.
Good to know, thanks guys. Want at least a 275 so that's what I'll shoot for when it's time. Waiting for my motor to find it's way home...
Back space on your rims can make a huge difference in what will and won't fit on the 68 and 69 cars. One side is always tighter than the other. Also, there is a metal bump in on the quarter in the center of the outer wheelhouse that is often rolled or cut out by previous owners if they tried running a wide 15" rim.
Thanks I'll look for that. I'll take some measurements with the wheels out and check my current backspacing before ordering.
I have 275 60 15 on the rear of my 69 and the Quarter bump outs are in place and not rolled. I have custom 15" X 8" wheels with I believe a 4 3/4" back space. The driver side is tight about 1/2 inch between the tire and the quarter. Tire changes are a challenge. If doing it over I might go 5" or 5 1/4 on the backspace and or trim the quarter. Good luck on your choice.
Buicksky what wheel do you have now? I am trying to find a 15x8 with 5-5.5 in backspacing. Just curious what fit on yours. Just got the car rolling finnally...
