What's the widest that will fit the rear of a 65 Wildcat on factory steel rally rims?

I want to keep the factory look, but stuff the widest meats inside of those wheel wells I can. I'm even considering banding a set of rims to widen them if I have to. Currently have 255/70/15's on it. I want more! More! More! LOL!

I have an 65 Electra, with 19x10 rims ET0, with 265/35-19 on them.. I wouldn't run wider than 285-295 wide, then you'll start rubbing..

So, according to the Buick Service manual that I have, the original size tire was 8.15" -15" or an optional size of 8.45" -15". My challenge is what is the overall height (Diameter) of the tire? They could have been anywhere from 23" to almost 29". Any way to clear this up?

It appears that an 8.45/15 is 28” tall. The modern equivalent is 235/70/15. If you had a wider rim you could run a 275/60, but on factory wheels the sidewalls look like cones.
