I'm thinking of putting a manual trans behing the 350 in my lincoln and was wondering what trans i should use. what 4 speed trans what work and approx how much should i anticipate on spending on the trans. will a 5 speed bolt up and work with the bellhousing and same question as above. in the next month or so i will be putting the 4.10 posi in my lincoln. what trans would stand up the power and the weight(approx 4200#). the car will never go to the track and will mainly be a cruiser and showoff car with little time on the freeway. it would be nice if it could stand up to a once and a while clutch drop. and one more thing, is there a 4 speed that is the same length as th-350 and even use the same yoke. that would be awsome.
    Thanks Jeramie :3gears:

How would an A-833 stand up behind the bick. i hear they are in gmc trucks up 89. this might help me with the 4.10 and the od ratio in the trans. thanks Jeramie :3gears:

They work for me! I like the OD. Plus they are cheap. My first one was free for some welding. The synchros wore out quick though. The current one is a $90 unit. So far its been great! I also have a back-up I paid $40 for. So Its like this, they aren't bulletproof. But for the price, who cares. Also, the input shaft cover will have to be machined down to fit the hole in a BOP bell. Then you gotta use socket-headed capscrews to reattach the cover so it will clear. The gasket will halfta be cut down or scratch made. It'll be within a 1/18 or so of leaking, so be precise. Here a pic of a GM application Chrysler built New Process A-833 OD.

how much does the cover have to be machined. is this something a shop will have to do or is it grind it till it fits. the input shaft itself doesn't have to be machined or does it. i have read the chrysler guys have to machine some of their input shafts. is there a preference of year or is it like what ever works good. Thanks for the input Jeramie.
also what clutch are you using.
Sorry one more thing, does the trans have a hydraulic clutch or is a cable clutch. Thanks
Also did you need a new yoke for the trans

I can't remember how much material had to come off the input shaft cover. Wasn't much. A local machine shop did it for me. It was like $15. Just bring a good BOP bell and tell em' you need the cover machined to fit the bell. The GM A 833s allready have GM splines front and rear. Year preference? Well, I've seen one variant that has the Chrysler bolt pattern, which had a special Chevy only Bell to bolt to. Stay away from that one. My guess is thats an early one. Most have the GM bolt pattern. I use a GM 10 1/2 clutch with the course spline disc. Pretty much fits all GM from 1955-the eighties that specifys course spline. I use linkage for my clutch, although you can do other stuff depending on how handy you are. BOP had a bell and clutchfork for a cable operate clutch in the late seventies for Skyhawks. They turn up on Ebay every now and then. To make it Hydralic would require some inginuity. Maybe adapt an OEM setup or seek an aftermarket one. Also, the GMC/Chevy truck shifter location may be to far back for a passenger car. It was for my Regal. I custom build my linkages, but I'd guess that any stock Mopar shifter or Hurst shifter for Mopar application should do the trick. Stock GM Yoke. I think I covered it all. Good luck with your idea. I'll take a better picture of the GM A 833s this week and show you how to easily identify them at swap meets. Always remove the side cover to inspect. As for re-attaching an A-833 side cover after you inspect it, well........, try not to swear to much!!

i Know i am asking alot but do you happen to know how far from the bell housing the stock shifter is. i am trying to get an idea of where the shifter will poke out at. i might end up putting some nice buckets in the lincoln. i dunno. getting the pedals to work will be my biggest challenge. 90's towncars never came in a stick but i am sure i will figure it out. i've seen a 91 crownvic that switched out. thanks you have been a big help Jeramie :3gears:

Dunno offhand were the shifter poked out stock. Seems to me it was about two inches further back than were I needed it to be for G body use. I think your gonna have to just see if you score a tranny with shifter and take it from there. You can relocate it with some time and a good welder if its not were you want it. I'd measure the current location but the Regal is in storage and my spares have no shifter. BTW, a Buick 350 in a Towncar?? You sound like a throwback to the fifties when there were REAL Hotrodders!!! Keep up the good work!!!

back in early march my aod trans blew, that and the 302 had a 160,000 miles on it. i had a 72 skylark 4dr that was rusted pretty bad so i pulled the motor and dry fitted it and it fit. so i welded to the motor mounts to the frame, built up the motor and now it surprises a lot of cars on the street. my th-350 broke after exactly 500 miles so now i am deciding on what to do. its a good thing i have a garage so i can work on it over the winter. my dads friend owns a junk yard and i frequent regulary so i get some pretty good deals. hopefully he can come through for me again and hook me up with a trans and maybe he has a bop manual car out there to. Thanks Jeramie
