Hello all. I am new to the forum. I fell in love with Skylarks, and other Buick models 40 years ago as a six year-old kid. I recently acquired a 71 custom, a complete running car in need of extensive body work, and a complete trunk floor. I also picked up a 70 GS 455 roller in fair shape. The 70 was advertised as a Stage 1 car, and came with documentation. However, I gave up on trying to authenticate the documentation I received. I have learned from this forum, that there is only one person on Earth that could do that for me. I left a message for him, maybe he will contact me one day. Stage 1 or not, my plan is to get the cars back on the road and enjoy them.

Also, could someone tell me how to ask questions in the forum properly. I’d like to find the proper bolts for my ignition switch. Thanks.

Looks like you’re doing fine in the question department.

Should put your name on your posts so we know who to address.

Go to a specific forum and title your post so members will read it. Then ask your questions with some detail.

Not sure what ignition switch bolts you’re asking about in this one.

Hi Duke. Thanks for the response. I’m trying to figure out the bolts that mount the ignition switch to the steering column. 104FC211-19DD-4C71-9AD5-209A1C13B27C.jpeg

Hello Robert. Welcome to this community. We are always happy to have new members. And the story of what you have as projects and why you are here is why this community exists. To share the passion we share and to learn or to teach. Asking and answering questions is how that happens.

With that said, I would like to offer several suggestions on how to make friends and influence fellow members. 1) Read the thread in the first section of the forums that gives you a general introduction into how the site is organized and what the standard operating procedures for navigating around the site. 2) Introduce yourself formally and give a bit of background on yourself, your car(s) and why you have joined us. 3) Find the forum that suits you question to the best or you knowledge. Odds are that you will get a quicker, more correct and more agreeable answer that way then posting in the general introduction forum.

Now, in trying to answer your question as best as I can and not being in the forum related to steering column or electrical topics, here is what I know. Finding the bolts you are looking for is most quickly and affectively accomplished by making a trip to a local salvage yard that has 60's and 70's vintage GM cars. Those bolts are used on every single column I have ever looked at. And the benefit is that you get to begin a relationship with a local yard, you get to explore the yard for stuff you will need at some point, you will support a local business in most instances, you get the correct part and usually remove it yourself and you get to save money in comparison to buying it from a restoration vendor.

Now, with that said. Many of of have a private stash of parts and pieces for situation much like this. I know I do and I also frequent my favorite yard, buy from local Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace listings, buy from vendors locally and nationally and trade with friends within this community.

    Regards,
    Erik

Thanks all for the responses. I was hoping someone was familiar with the thread/pitch size for the bolts that attach the ignition switch to the steering column. I will try to post in a more appropriate area, and see what happens. I chose “wet behind the ears” because that is exactly what I am. I may just have to drop the column on my 71, remove the bolts and match up.

    Thank you,

    Robert

    Robert,
Unless someone has recently done what you are doing, they won't remember bolt sizes. Our member ToddsGS runs https://www.stage1restoration.com/ He sells a lot of bolt kits, so he may know off hand. Try calling him or sending him a private message through the board. To do that, click on the below link, then information, then start a conversation. Fill out the PM window.

Another idea is to ask someone who rebuilds steering columns. They might be more familiar with the bolt sizes. One of our moderators, Jason Cook (CJay) does that,
