I have a 11/76 built Buick Regal and was wondering what rear would it have come with? 8.5 8.2 and what range of year gears will interchange?
Just bought a 1976 Buick Regal a month ago. Regals (A Body) had the 8,5" ring gear and factory optional gear-sets were 2:56, 2:73, 3:08, 3:23 (231 V-6 with THM 350 or 3-speed manual transmission.) Nando.
Then was it the 78 and up that some cane with the small rear, I know I worked on an early 80s monte and it was the little unit
Just post a picture of the rear cover, and look at the rear u-joint to yoke retention. Should be cap screws and straps.
The '78 and up G bodies were almost all 7.5s, the exceptions were Turbo Regals/Grand Nationals (which makes sense) and Oldsmobile 442s and Hursts (behind wheezy 307s, almost as if Lansing was apologizing for the engine and trying to make it up by giving the buyer the better 200R4 and 8.5). Even the Monte SS cars got 7.5s. Patrick
Yeah it makes me chuckle, Olds..."heres your doggy 307, BUT WAIT... you get the beefy rear!" Chevy...."This car is FAAAAST!" Engineers.... "Give 'em the shitty rear, its not that powerful" LOL
Yes all 73-77 rears 8.5 will interchange in the A-body chassis . G-body 1978-1988 will all be 7.5 rear with 26 spline axles. The 84-88 Monte SS and some others like cutlass and GP will have a redesigned 7.625 carrier with larger spiders BUT will still be the small 26 spline axles. the 1984-1987 GN, T-Type and 442 cars were optioned with 8.5 rears.
I got my posi, dbl hump cross member, complete exhaust and 400 tranny out of a mid 70s wagon when I pulled out my 231 to drop in my 455 built with all Kenne-Bell parts.
