What does it mean when the paint code is blank?

    David,

You might check with Mark, IIRC he said it was either a special order Rivy color or a special order spring color, can't remember which. The guy who consigned it there the first time (he has it back a couple of times) has consigned several cars with Mark, and I think he might have purchased from the first owner, but I am not positive.

I think I have his name here Chris. He had it in Idaho. His first name is Troy. I think he bought it from the Utah owner. I'll call and check. I think he's the one that had it repainted.

    David,
If you find the large GMAD buildsheet, that usually is taped to the top of the gas tank, or under the rear shelf, it should list the color paint they used. With that sheet you also might be able to figure out the codes on the sheet you found.

I talked about sheets like this in the buildsheet article I wrote for the BPG newsletter. There is an example of a 72 SCO car from Fremont, courtesy of John Diaz, that shows the paint mix used. The article lists the commonly found buildsheets and explains the differences between them. It will be out in the next issue.

Body was built 4th week of May and car was delivered July 3rd., so car probably was assembled the last week of May or the first week of June. Would the Sloan Museum have any info on this car? :Do No:

    The 1969 Daily Car Report for the GS400 Coupe shows the following;

127 painted Fire Glow Orange (102 of those @ Flint)

There were 61 S.C.O Paint cars (51 from Flint).

If your car is not Fire Glow Orange it must be one of the 61 S.C.O paint cars.

I think those guys are before the one I was thinking of, so that is good. The guy I was thinking of is "Dr. Bob" I think, he is a dentist or something. He buys musclecars and fixes them and sells them. I know he owned this one, but I think it was after the paint job. He put the 8 track in and I think the sport wheel.

Well if that's the case then "Dr. Bob" needs a good talkin' to.

He installed the 8-Track so it blocks the gas pedal!!!!

When you lift off the gas and try to mash the brake your toes hit the back of the 8-Track. I guess he had small tootsies..

Dr. Bob isn't a very big guy, I am guessing he probably does have small toes!!

    Fireglow

Speaking of the Fireglow color - I have a brochure annoucing it as a new spring color for the GS Buicks in 1969- "Put sparkle into your showroom and prospect's eyes with GS Fireglow, an exciting new shade for spring. This new offering is a GS exclussive>>>>>>>>>> It was a $49.59 option and was coded Q

Looking at the vin # it shows the car was built at the Fremont plant. Most of the cowl tag info available about the Gran Sports is for Flint built cars. The double dashes is probably Fremont code for SCO.
I would suggest removing the chrome trim that holds the door weatherstrip to research the color. Most paint shops don't remove this when they do a repaint. You might also try looking for other areas that might be hiding the original paint like under the door panels or the rear panels.
    Good luck with your research.

I want to thank all of you guys!!

Thanks Duane.. I will definitely be removing the tank to check. But one problem. I just filled it. Oh well, I guess I'll have to go for a ride to burn it off.

I'm coming to the conclusion that the car is fire glow orange. I went to a car show last night and asked everyone that came by to look at it what color they thought it was. And most thought it was either copper, gold or orange.

What I need to do is just buy a pint of Q and paint something with it. Be worth the 60 bucks to be sure. :pp

Hey Dave. I checked and it looks like the painter removed every piece before he painted the car. That thorough bastard!!!

But the inside of the fenders and trunk are still original paint.

    fire glow

It appears it is fire glow now, BUT that doesn't mean that's what it was originally - Who knows, as neat of a color as fire glow (Orange is not in the name) - if they didn't use the blank designation in the color code for fire glow your car may be a really neat or wild special color.

    Keith,

The color chart linked in the second thread lists the color as "Fire Glow Orange Poly", is this not correct?

    no orange

As I said, I have an original brochure announcing the new color for spring. It was a GS only color and everywhere on the brochure that refers to the color calls it (GS Fireglow) - I tried scanning it and posting it but it didn't like taking the scan - as soon as I get batteries for my digital camera this weekend I will photograph it and post it.
