What are these wires under the dash

So I replaced the plastic lenses on my speedo and fuel/dummy light gauge, added LED bulbs all over and I am installing a parts place tach. Also, I am adding in three autometer gauges (Water temp, oil pressure and voltage). With that, I removed the dash pad and pulled out the instrument cluster and noticed a mess.

I do have a manual, but unfortunately, it is at my other house (I cannot get it until May - I know first world problems...).

    1970 GS 350 4 speed - no AC

Question 1) I have a bunch of wires that I believe are not part of the car. I bought this my 1970 GS 350 in 2005, and at that time removed a 80s type tape deck. I believe a lot of the wires in the pictures I attached go to that. Additionally, there was a water temp gauge in there that spliced into things. I am thinking, I can just cap off the wire ends after cutting the old water temp gauge out and the old tape deck wiring.

Question 2) I have a few wires that go to nothing so I assume they are factory and for an option I do not have.
    a) I found a red wire that is not connected to anything down by the parking brake
    b) I have a yellow wire that go to nothing that may connect to the original radio
    c) I have the wackiest ball looking mess right next to the two wires that tie into light connections for the tach.

I included pictures and I realize I have a lot of questions but I am trying to finish this up today (MLK day off).

    Thoughts here?

I'm pretty sure that connector with the red, brown, white, green, and gray wires is from the old aftermarket radio. Those colors are pretty typical for the power, light, and speaker wires.

I can't recall what the red wire is for but sure is familiar - I can check a recent harness I pulled if no one chimes in. Yellow should be the radio & that other thing isn't factory.

Another 350 4-sp! Does your car by chance still have the original emissions decal?

Yup, it appears that the weird 5 prong wiring thing is the after market tape deck wiring. There were speaker wires tying into the left side of the dashboard metal above the parking brake. I just removed it all.

I have two other wires, no idea what they are next to the yellow wire that leads towards where the radio would go.

Here is a picture of the yellow wire, the red wire and the weird grey wire with some metal piece on the end, maybe a tie in to the windshield antenna??? Any ideas on the red and grey wire (Sounds like the yellow wire is radio related from post above).

Where would I find the emissions decal, no idea?

I'll have to look it up, but I think the weird grey thing is the ashtray light bulb. Need to find my notes/pictures.

I believe you are correct on ashtray light.

Found an old picture of when I installed my original radio. The three prong connector gets the yellow plugged into it. Yellow should be switchable power and the the other two are the front speaker (green & black). Ground of the radio connects thru the metal case to the dash, so no ground wire. I have a splice on my yellow wire so that I could connect the volt meter under the dash.

Orange should be constant power so that when you open your door, the lights go on.
Yes, the ashtray is grey and has a goofy metal tube that houses the bulb and makes the ground connection. It connects on the back of the metal dash just above the ashtray and under the radio hole.
So grey should be powered when you pull the headlight switch out. So grey goes to all the bulbs to lite up gauges at night time.

It would be on the metal (or plastic if early '70) radiator cover. Thanks!

I don't see anything on the radiator cover, sorry.

    Thanks for the help everyone.

I am basically all done however, one LED light does not seem to go on in the fuel/dummy gauge on the bottom right corner. I believe it os the contact because I have moved the socket and the bulb to other spots in the gauge and they work. Can I tale a little fine sand paper to improve the contatct to the circuit board?

Also, for the life of me, I cannot get the parts place tach to work. I have a brown wire to the negative sie of the coil, I have a red wire connected to a 12 volt switchable source on the fuse box labeled IGN. I will throw a Multimeter to see if it is working on run and cranking the motor. I used the 2 light sockets that go into the original tach and put them into the back of the parts place tach. I also made a ground wire and grounded the tach through one of the studs it connects to and then to the metal on the back of the firewall area. No luck at all, no lights, nada.....

Multimeter says 8 volts when in run for the IGN terminal on the fuse box, I did not try to crank the motor though. I did notice that I have the original tach wire within the wiring harness that should go to the keyed 12v source on the back of the tach. It has the end cut off and it was connected to the lights of the old water temperature gauge I removed. I will put a new connection on it and see if that works. Only other thing I will check is maybe I have a weak ground from the gauge body or maybe the connection to the negative side of the coil is bad.
